Uber can freeze, spin, reject a ride request, miss your location, or block sign-in right when you need it. Most failures come from a temporary Uber error, a stale connection, missing permissions, an outdated app, or an account setting that needs attention. Start with the fast fixes below, then move into account, reinstall, and Uber Help steps only if the problem continues.

Give Uber a minute and reopen it

A temporary Uber outage or platform error is one of the fastest explanations when sign-in or ride requests suddenly fail.

Wait a few minutes, then open Uber again and repeat the same action.

If the app is frozen, close it fully before reopening. On iPhone X or later, swipe up from the bottom and pause, find Uber, then swipe up on its preview.

On iPhone SE, iPhone 8 and earlier, or iPod touch, double-click the Home button, find Uber, then swipe up on its preview.

On Android, open the recent apps screen and swipe Uber off the screen. You can also open phone settings for Uber and tap Force Stop if your phone shows that option.

Refresh the phone connection

Use this when Uber opens but keeps loading, cannot finish sign-in, will not request a ride, or works on Wi-Fi but not mobile data.

Open Settings, turn Airplane Mode on, then turn Airplane Mode off again.

If you are downloading or updating Uber and cellular data fails, connect to Wi-Fi. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap Wi-Fi, turn Wi-Fi on, then tap the network name.

When Uber works on Wi-Fi but not mobile data on iPhone, open Settings, tap Cellular, and turn Cellular Data on. Scroll to Uber and turn cellular data on for Uber too.

Make sure location access is allowed

Uber needs location access for pickup, maps, and driver navigation. If the app opens but cannot place you correctly, check permissions before reinstalling anything.

On iPhone, open Settings, tap Privacy & Security, then Location Services. Turn Location Services on, tap Uber, choose While Using the App or Always when offered, and turn on Precise Location.

On Android, touch and hold the Uber app icon, tap App info, then Permissions and Location. Choose an allow option such as Allow only while using the app.

Also check Android’s device location switch by opening Settings, tapping Location, and turning Use location on.

Update Uber and your phone software

An outdated Uber app is a common cause of crashes, failed loading, and missing newer account or booking features.

On iPhone or iPad, open the App Store, tap your profile icon, tap App Updates, and update Uber if it appears.

If Uber has no app update but problems continue, open Settings, tap General, then Software Update. Tap Download and Install when an update is available.

On Android, open Google Play Store, tap your profile icon, choose Manage apps & device, then tap See details under available updates. Tap Update next to Uber, or tap Update all.

Uber lists Android 8.0 or higher for the current rider app. For Android system updates, open Settings, tap System, then Software update; on some phones, tap About phone or About tablet first.

Restart the device

Use this after force closing Uber and refreshing the connection, especially when the app freezes, crashes, or stays stuck after an update.

On iPhone X, iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, or later, press and hold either volume button and the side button until the power-off slider appears. Drag the slider, wait 30 seconds, then press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.

On iPhone 6, iPhone 7, iPhone 8, or iPhone SE 2nd or 3rd generation, press and hold the side button until the slider appears. Drag the slider, wait 30 seconds, then hold the side button again.

On iPhone SE 1st generation, iPhone 5, or earlier, use the top button instead.

On Android, hold the power button until power options appear, choose to power off, wait a few seconds, then hold the power button again. If the phone is frozen with the screen on, hold the power button for about 30 seconds.

Fix sign-in codes and password problems

When the app itself loads but the account will not let you in, handle the account block directly.

  1. 1.Go to Uber’s password reset page, enter the email address on the account, then open the reset email within 10 minutes.
  2. 2.If the app prompts you, tap More Options and choose a verification option you can access.
  3. 3.If you lost the phone number on the account, open Uber, go to Get Started, tap Changed your mobile number?, and follow the prompts.
  4. 4.If two-step verification blocks you, tap I’m having trouble on the verification code screen, then tap Use backup code, labeled Use 8-digit backup code on some screens, and enter one of your saved backup codes. Each code works only once.
  5. 5.If SMS codes are not arriving, move to an area with good cell reception and confirm that the phone number stored in Uber matches your current number.

Clear storage issues or reinstall Uber

Free space first.

On Android, clear app cache or remove unused content and apps when storage is low.

On iPhone, tap Continue if an update asks to temporarily remove apps, or manually delete content to make room.

On Android, open Settings, tap Apps, tap Uber, then tap Storage & cache or Storage. Tap Clear cache.

Use Clear storage or Clear data only when cache clearing fails, because it can permanently delete app data and may sign you out.

To reinstall on Android, open Google Play Store, tap the profile icon, choose Manage apps & devices, then Manage. Select Uber, tap Uninstall, then reinstall Uber from Google Play.

To reinstall on iPhone, touch and hold Uber on the Home Screen, tap Remove App, tap Delete App, then tap Delete to confirm. You can also touch and hold Uber in App Library, tap Delete App, then tap Delete.

Use Uber’s official download page, the App Store listing, or Google Play listing when you install it again.

Check why Uber cannot request a ride

Use this when the app opens and you can sign in, but the ride request itself fails. At that point, payment, account readiness, or a temporary Uber error is usually the blocker.

Open Account, then Wallet, and confirm your registered payment methods are active and have enough balance. Select the payment method to update it, or add a new payment method.

Next, open Account and tap your photo or the symbol next to your name. Under Uber Account and Account Information, complete any recommended action shown for your profile.

If the same request keeps failing, sign in on Uber’s web booking page or another device and try again with the same account. To request on the web, go to uber.com/go or m.uber.com, which Uber uses for the same web booking page, then sign in, set your pickup location, add your destination, select a ride option, and confirm.

The old Windows Uber app is not available. Use the mobile app or m.uber.com instead.

Escalate through Uber Help

When the main fixes do not clear the problem, send Uber the details through the matching Help flow.

  1. 1.Open the relevant Uber Help article for sign-in, password reset, phone access, map problems, or ride requests.
  2. 2.Fill out the form fields shown and attach a screenshot when the form asks for one.
  3. 3.Enter the email address where Uber support can contact you.
  4. 4.Open the automated email from Uber and choose Confirm email address.
  5. 5.Submit the form or continue with the support flow shown on screen.

On a work or school-managed phone, app updates, app removal, and some permissions can be controlled by the organization. If Uber cannot be updated, deleted, or opened on that device, ask the device administrator to remove the restriction or update the managed app.
