DS4Windows won't open, your controller isn't showing up, or your game ignores every button press. Start with the connection check below, then jump to the fix that matches your problem. The app-specific steps apply to hbashton’s DS4Windows 5 fork; older editions use different menus and drivers.
Rule out the controller connection first
This check separates a faulty USB connection from a remapping problem.
Connect your controller with a known data-capable USB cable. For a genuine DUALSHOCK 4, use a compatible micro-USB cable. Charging alone does not prove that the cable carries data.
Test another USB port on your PC.
For a genuine DUALSHOCK 4, test the wired connection in a game that directly supports the controller.
If Windows reports Code 22, re-enable the affected controller in Device Manager through Action > Enable Device.
Check your edition if DS4Windows will not open
The actively developed hbashton DS4Windows 5 project is an independent fork. It is not an official Sony product or an automatically interchangeable upgrade for every older installation. Its VIIPERRC4.6.2 release, application version 5.0.8.0, is marked Pre-release and targets Windows 10/11 x64.
For this fork, download the complete installer or portable package from the maintainer’s Releases page. Copying only the executable leaves out required components. Custom-named portable installations need DS4Updater 2.0.7 or later for the update fix.
For a build requiring Visual C++ runtime libraries, install the current supported v14 x64 Redistributable package from Microsoft’s download page.
DS4Windows 5 release packages bundle their .NET runtime and use VIIPER for virtual-controller support, with HidHide handling controller hiding. ViGEmBus is retired; installing it does not repair this fork’s backend.
If startup reports missing VIIPER or usbip-win2 components, complete the elevated setup offered when you launch DS4Windows.
If startup still fails after setup, try the built-in backend repair below.
Restore controller support and virtual output
Controller connected to Windows but missing from DS4Windows? Enable its controller family under Settings > Device Options.
If DS4Windows detects the controller but cannot provide virtual-controller output, select Settings > VIIPER Virtual Controller Support > Install / Repair VIIPER.
Approve setup using an administrator account. If setup installs or updates usbip-win2 and asks for a restart, restart Windows before continuing.
After the repair and any required restart, select Refresh in DS4Windows’ Settings to recheck backend readiness.
Rebuild a Bluetooth connection that will not pair
On Windows 11, switch Bluetooth off under Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
Switch Bluetooth back on.
Turn off Airplane mode in the taskbar quick settings.
For a controller already paired to this PC, remove its saved pairing under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices, using More options > Remove device > Yes.
Disconnect the controller’s USB cable.
Turn the controller off.
Put it into pairing mode: on DUALSHOCK 4, hold SHARE and PS until the light bar flashes; on DualSense, hold create and PS until the light bar blinks.
Select your controller through Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device > Bluetooth.
If it is missing from discovery results, set Bluetooth devices discovery to Advanced under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices > Device settings.
For a connection that still fails, run the diagnostics through Run the troubleshooter in Get Help on Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting page.
Tip: Keep the controller charged and away from interfering USB 3.0 devices during pairing.
Correct HidHide when input doubles or disappears
HidHide needs to hide the physical controller from games while keeping it accessible to DS4Windows and leaving virtual output visible.
- 1.Keep Use HidHide to Prevent Double Input enabled in DS4Windows 5.
- 2.If DS4Windows cannot detect the controller, temporarily clear Enable device hiding in HidHide Configuration Client > Devices.
- 3.If detection returns, add the actual DS4Windows executable to the allowlist under Applications. This matters after moving or renaming the app.
- 4.In Devices, select the physical controller and leave virtual outputs unselected. Configure both physical USB and Bluetooth entries if you use both connections.
- 5.Restore Enable device hiding.
- 6.Reconnect the controller.
Stop Steam Input from conflicting with your game
For a Steam game using DS4Windows or native controller support, test its Steam Input override. Open the affected game’s Properties > Controller by right-clicking it in Steam’s LIBRARY.
Set the game’s override to Disable Steam Input.
Relaunch the game after closing the settings window to test the change.
For DualSense or DualSense Edge game problems while PlayStation Accessories is open, reconnect the controller after closing that app.
Repair automatic startup
This addresses DS4Windows working when opened manually but failing to start at sign-in.
Update the hbashton fork to RC4.6.2 or later using the complete package. That release includes fixes for startup-task failures.
Enable Run at Startup.
Run the built-in repair through Settings > VIIPER Virtual Controller Support > Install / Repair VIIPER. Setup manages the RunDS4Windows and RunVIIPER sign-in tasks.
Complete the restart requested by setup.
If startup remains requested but inactive, follow the app’s requested repair or reboot action.
Check the controller itself
For DualSense or DualSense Edge, download PlayStation Accessories using Download for Windows on Sony’s product page. This app does not provide DUALSHOCK 4 firmware updates.
Connect your DualSense or DualSense Edge to the PC.
Open PlayStation Accessories.
When a firmware update is offered, select Firmware for your controller > Update. The controller must stay connected and the PC powered on until the update finishes.
For unexpected DualSense or DualSense Edge behavior, press the recessed reset button with a fine-tipped tool. This physical reset preserves pairing and profile settings.
For a DUALSHOCK 4 reset instead, turn off any PS4.
Unplug the PS4.
Disconnect the DUALSHOCK 4’s USB cable.
Hold its recessed rear reset button with a paper clip for at least five seconds.
Reconnect or pair the DUALSHOCK 4 to your PC.
Tip: On DualSense Edge, hold Fn and press triangle to activate the default profile and rule out onboard remapping.
Get a useful diagnosis if it still fails
For repeated Bluetooth disconnections, update the adapter driver through Device Manager > Bluetooth: right-click the adapter and select Update driver.
If Windows finds nothing, obtain the driver from your PC or adapter manufacturer.
For adapters with a Power Management tab in their properties, clear Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. This setting only applies to adapters that expose it.
For an unresolved DS4Windows failure, enable Verbose logging.
Reproduce the problem. The log is saved at %APPDATA%\DS4Windows\Logs\ds4windows_log.txt, or in the Logs folder beside the app if your portable copy keeps its settings there.
If these fixes fail, attach that log to a report in the hbashton maintainer’s Issues section.
For a DUALSHOCK 4 that still malfunctions after connection tests and a reset, try PlayStation Repairs through Sony’s controller troubleshooting page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does HidHide crash when I open its configuration window?
Application-execution aliases can cause this crash. Update the hbashton fork to RC4.6.1 or later. Open HidHide through DS4Windows. If the app detects unsafe aliases, review the prompt before accepting its backed-up repair.
Can I fix DS4Windows on a work or school PC?
Required driver setup needs administrator approval. If your organization blocks controller or virtual-device installation, ask its administrator to review the device-installation restrictions and retry installation.
Can my DualSense reconnect to a saved PC pairing slot?
Yes, on firmware supporting four paired devices. With the PC on, hold PS plus the assigned slot’s action button for about three seconds: triangle for slot 1, circle for 2, cross for 3, or square for 4. Release when the indicators blink. The PC must already be assigned to that slot.
Why are adaptive-trigger effects missing on my DualSense Edge?
Shortened trigger travel disables adaptive effects. Move the rear L2/R2 stop sliders to their top, full-travel positions. Review the profile’s trigger intensity and dead-zone settings.
