Spam calls and unwanted texts are a modern nuisance, but your Motorola Razr Plus (2024) has the tools to shut them down. Blocking a number on Android is straightforward, and once you do, that contact can't reach you by call or SMS. I'll walk you through the different ways to do it, whether you're in your call log, a text thread, or your contacts list.

Block a Number from Your Call History

Open your Phone app and tap the Recents tab. Find the number you want to block in the list. Tap and hold on the entry until a menu pops up, then select Block/report spam. You'll be asked to confirm, and that's it. Future calls from that number will be silently sent to voicemail.

Block Someone from a Text Conversation

If the spam is coming via text, open the Messages app. Find and open the conversation with the unwanted number. Tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner and select Details. On the contact details screen, you'll see an option for Block & report spam. Tapping this will block all future messages and optionally report the number to Google.

This method is handy because you're already looking at the offending messages. It takes just a few taps to make them stop for good.

Block a Contact Directly

For someone already in your address book, open the Contacts app. Find and tap on the person's name to open their full contact card. Tap the three-dot menu button in the top corner and choose Block. You'll get a confirmation prompt explaining that blocked contacts can't call or message you.

This blocks every phone number associated with that contact. It's a clean way to handle an ex-colleague or a persistent telemarketer whose number you've already saved.

Manage Your Entire Blocked List

To see who you've blocked or to unblock someone, you need to go into your phone's settings. Open the Phone app, tap the three-dot menu, and go to Settings. From there, look for Blocked numbers. You'll see a list of every number you've blocked.

Tap the X or Remove icon next to any entry to unblock it. You can also manually add numbers to this list by tapping Add a number. This is useful if someone gives you a heads-up about a spam number before it even rings.

Turn On Google's Spam Protection

Your Razr Plus uses Google's Phone app by default, which has excellent built-in spam filtering. To enable it, go to Phone app Settings > Caller ID & spam. Here, toggle on both See caller and spam ID and Filter spam calls.

With this on, your phone will warn you about suspected spam calls as they come in. It can even automatically decline calls it's highly confident are spam, saving you the interruption. I've found this catches a huge percentage of robocalls before they ever ring.

Silence Calls from Unknown Numbers

For a more nuclear option, you can silence all calls from numbers not in your contacts. In the same Blocked numbers menu within the Phone settings, look for a toggle labeled Unknown or Block calls from unknown callers.

Turn this on, and any number that isn't saved to your phone will be sent straight to voicemail. This is very effective but use it cautiously. Doctors' offices, delivery drivers, or potential employers calling from a main line might get blocked. They can still leave a message, which you'll see in your voicemail transcript.

What Actually Happens When You Block

When you block a number, the caller typically hears one ring before being redirected to your voicemail. They won't receive any notification that they've been specifically blocked. On your end, their calls simply won't ring through, and any text messages they send are deleted without ever hitting your inbox.

It's a silent rejection. The blocked person might figure it out if they never get through, but there's no official message or alert sent to them from your phone or carrier.

Deal with Spam Emails in Gmail

If spam is hitting your email instead, the Gmail app on your Razr Plus can handle it. Open the unwanted email, tap the three-dot menu at the top, and select Block "[sender]". This sends all future emails from that address directly to your Spam folder.

For more malicious emails, use Report spam instead. This helps train Google's filters for everyone. You can review and manage blocked email addresses by going to Gmail Settings > [your account] > Blocked addresses.

Consider a Dedicated Call-Blocking App

For the ultimate defense, especially if you get a lot of spam, a third-party app can help. Apps like Truecaller or Hiya maintain massive, constantly updated databases of spam numbers. They can identify and block calls before your phone even rings.

After installing one from the Play Store, it will guide you through granting the necessary permissions to screen calls. These apps often provide caller ID for unknown numbers, too, using community reports to show you who's calling even if it's not in your contacts.
