Getting unwanted calls or texts on your new Motorola Edge 50 Pro can be a real nuisance, especially when you're trying to enjoy the phone's smooth Android 14 experience. The good news is that blocking numbers is a straightforward process built right into the system. Once you block someone, their calls and messages are silently filtered out, giving you back your peace and quiet.

Block a Number from Your Call Log

Open your Phone app and tap the "Recents" tab at the bottom. Find the number you want to block in your call history. Tap and hold on that entry until a menu pops up. From there, select "Block/report spam" and then confirm by tapping "Block". The number is now blocked from calling or texting you.

This is often the quickest way to deal with a recent spam caller. The process uses the standard Google Phone app interface, which is common on many Android devices including the Edge 50 Pro.

Block a Contact Directly from Messages

If the spam is coming via text, open your Messages app. Find and open the conversation thread from the unwanted number. Tap the three-dot menu icon in the top-right corner of the screen. Select "Details" from the menu that appears.

On the contact details screen, you'll see an option labeled "Block & report spam". Tap it. You'll get a final confirmation screen explaining that the contact will be blocked and the conversation reported as spam. Tap "Block" to complete the action. I've found this method is very reliable for stopping persistent text spammers.

Block Someone from Your Contacts List

For blocking people you actually know, open your Contacts app. Find and tap on the contact's name to open their full details page. Look for the three-dot menu icon in the top-right corner and tap it. You should see an option called "Block" or "Block numbers".

Selecting this will block all phone numbers associated with that contact. This is useful if you need to block an ex or a persistent telemarketer whose number is already saved. The change takes effect immediately.

Manage Your Entire Blocked List

To see who you've blocked or to unblock a number, go back to your Phone app. Tap the three-dot menu icon in the search bar and select "Settings". From Settings, choose "Blocked numbers".

You'll see a complete list of every number you've blocked. To remove a number from the list, simply tap the "X" icon next to it and confirm. You can also manually add numbers to this list by tapping "Add a number" at the bottom, which is handy for preemptively blocking a number you know is problematic.

Turn On Built-in Spam Protection

Your Motorola Edge 50 Pro comes with Google's powerful spam detection already installed. To make sure it's active, open the Phone app, go to Settings, and select "Caller ID & spam". Here, toggle on both "See caller and spam ID" and "Filter spam calls".

With this enabled, the phone will automatically screen incoming calls against a massive database of known spam numbers. Calls flagged as spam will show a red warning screen and can be set to ring silently or not at all, saving you the interruption. It's a great first line of defense.

Block All Unknown and Private Numbers

For the ultimate in call screening, you can block any number not in your contacts. In the Phone app, go to Settings > Blocked numbers. On this screen, look for and toggle on the option for "Unknown".

This will send all calls from hidden or private numbers straight to voicemail. It's a very effective way to stop robocalls and scammers who spoof their caller ID. Just be aware that legitimate calls from doctors' offices or businesses might also get blocked, so check your voicemail regularly.

What Actually Happens When You Block

When you block a number on your Edge 50 Pro, the caller doesn't get a specific notification. From their perspective, the phone might ring once before going to voicemail, or it may go straight to voicemail depending on your carrier. They won't receive any message saying they are blocked.

Text messages from a blocked number are completely discarded. They won't appear in your Messages app, and you won't get any notification. The system handles it silently in the background, which is exactly what you want.

Deal with Spam Emails in Gmail

If you're using the Gmail app on your phone for email, you can block senders there too. Open the Gmail app and find an email from the unwanted sender. Open the email, tap the three-dot menu at the top, and select "Block [sender's name]".

Confirm by tapping "Block" in the pop-up. Future emails from that address will automatically go to your Spam folder. To manage your list of blocked email addresses, tap the menu icon in Gmail, go to Settings, select your account, and then tap "Blocked addresses".

Consider a Dedicated Call Blocker App

For even more powerful filtering, you can install a third-party app from the Google Play Store. Apps like Truecaller have enormous, community-updated databases of spam numbers and can automatically identify and block them before your phone even rings.

These apps often provide caller ID for unknown numbers and can be set to work seamlessly with your Edge 50 Pro's dialer. Just download one, follow the setup prompts to grant the necessary permissions, and you'll have an extra layer of protection against unwanted calls.
