Spam calls and unwanted texts are a modern nuisance, but your Motorola Edge 40 gives you the tools to shut them down. Blocking a number on Android 15 is straightforward, and once you do, that contact can't reach you by call or SMS. Here's how to manage it all directly from your phone's built-in apps.
Block a Number from Your Call Log
Open your Phone app and tap the Recents tab. Find the number you want to block in your call history. Tap on it to view the call details. On the details screen, you should see an option like Block/report spam. Tap it and confirm your choice. The number is now blocked from calling or texting you.
Some carrier versions of the dialer might have a slightly different path. If you don't see the option immediately, look for a three-dot menu on the call details page. The block function will be in there.
Block Someone from a Text Conversation
If the spam is coming via text, open the Messages app. Find and open the conversation with the unwanted number. Tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner and select Details.
On the conversation details screen, you’ll find the option to Block & report spam
To block someone you've saved, open the Contacts app. Find and tap on the contact's name to open their card. Tap the three-dot menu button, usually in the top right. Select Block numbers from the menu. This will block every phone number listed for that contact. It's a clean way to cut off someone who uses multiple numbers to reach you. To see who you've blocked or to unblock someone, go to your Phone app's settings. Tap the three-dot menu, then go to Settings > Blocked numbers. You’ll see a list of all blocked contacts. To remove a number, just tap the X or Unblock button next to it. You can also manually add numbers to this list by tapping Add a number. Your Motorola Edge 40 uses Google's Phone app by default, which has excellent built-in spam filtering. To make sure it's on, go to Phone app Settings > Caller ID & spam.
Block a Contact from Your Address Book
Manage Your Entire Blocked List
Turn On Google's Spam Protection
Toggle on both See caller and spam ID and Filter spam calls. With this enabled, calls identified as spam will be automatically declined and sent to voicemail. You'll see a warning on screen if a suspected spam call does come through.
Silence Calls from Unknown Numbers
For a more aggressive approach, you can silence all calls from numbers not in your contacts. In the Phone app Settings > Blocked numbers menu, look for the option Unknown or Block calls from unknown callers.
Turn this toggle on. Calls from numbers not saved in your phone will be sent straight to voicemail without ringing. This is great for stopping robocalls, but remember that legitimate calls from doctors' offices or delivery drivers will also be silenced.
What Actually Happens When You Block
When you block a number, the caller typically hears one ring before being sent to your voicemail, or they may hear a busy signal. They won't receive any notification that they've been specifically blocked.
For text messages, it's even simpler. Any SMS or MMS from a blocked number is silently deleted before it reaches your inbox. You won't see it, and they won't get a delivery failure notice.
Consider a Dedicated Call Blocker App
If you get an extreme amount of spam, a third-party app can offer more powerful filtering. Apps like Truecaller or Hiya use massive, crowdsourced databases to identify and block spam calls in real-time.
After installing one from the Google Play Store, it will ask for permission to manage your calls. Once granted, it can screen and block calls before your phone even rings, often identifying nuisance callers by name.
