Spam calls and unwanted messages can be a real nuisance, even on your iPad. While the iPad Pro 2026 (M4) is primarily a productivity and creative powerhouse, it's also a communication hub through FaceTime, iMessage, and cellular calls if you have that model. Blocking numbers is a straightforward way to take back control of your notifications.
Once you block a contact, they won't be able to reach you via FaceTime audio or video calls, or through iMessage and SMS. The process is integrated across the system, so blocking them once covers all communication channels.
Block a Number from Your Recent Calls List
If you just got an unwanted call, the quickest way to block it is from the Phone app. Open the Phone app and tap on the Recents tab. Find the number you want to block and tap the small (i) information icon next to it.
Scroll down on the info screen until you see the Block this Caller option. Tap it, and then confirm by tapping Block Contact. That's all it takes. Future calls from this number will be silenced and sent directly to voicemail, if you have that set up.
Block a Contact Directly from a Messages Conversation
For persistent text spammers, you can block them right from the Messages app. Open the conversation thread with the unwanted sender. At the top of the screen, tap on the contact's name or phone number.
This will open a details panel. Tap the (i) info button here. Scroll down this new screen and you'll find the Block this Caller button. Confirm your choice, and you won't receive any more iMessages or texts from that number.
Block Someone Saved in Your Contacts
If you need to block someone whose information you've saved, open the Contacts app. Find and tap on their name to open their full contact card. Scroll all the way to the bottom of this card.
You'll see the option to Block this Caller. Tapping this will block every phone number and email address listed on that contact card. It's a comprehensive block that applies to FaceTime and Messages as well.
Review and Edit Your Blocked List
To see who you've blocked or to unblock someone, go to your iPad's Settings app. From there, tap on Messages (or FaceTime, the list is shared). Look for the Blocked Contacts option and tap it.
You'll see a complete list. To unblock a number, swipe left on the entry and tap Unblock. You can also tap Edit in the top corner to remove multiple blocked contacts at once.
Silence Calls from Unknown Numbers
For a more blanket approach to spam calls, you can enable a setting that quiets all unknown callers. Go to Settings > FaceTime. Look for the Silence Unknown Callers toggle and turn it on.
When this is on, any FaceTime call from a number not in your contacts, your recent outgoing calls, or your Siri Suggestions will be silenced. The call will still go to voicemail and appear in your recents, but your iPad won't ring. It's very effective, but just know it could silence legitimate calls from new businesses or services.
Report and Block SMS Spam
When you get a spam text message, you have the option to report it directly. Open the message from the unknown sender. Below the message text, you should see a Report Junk link.
Tapping this does two things. It immediately blocks the sender so you won't get more messages from them, and it forwards the spam report to Apple and your cellular carrier to help improve their filters. You can also manage messages from unknown senders by going to Settings > Messages and turning on Filter Unknown Senders.
What Actually Happens When You Block Someone
From the blocked person's perspective, a FaceTime call will ring once or twice on their end before it stops. They'll be sent to voicemail if you have it enabled. They aren't notified that they've been blocked, so the experience feels normal to them.
On your end, you won't get any notification for the call or for any iMessages they send. The messages are simply not delivered to your device. If they leave a voicemail, it will be stored in a separate section of your voicemail box so you can review it later if you choose.
Block Unwanted Email Senders in the Mail App
If spam is coming through your email, you can block senders there too. In the Mail app, open an email from the sender you want to block. Tap the sender's name at the top of the email header, then tap it again in the pop-up window.
Select Block this Contact. Future emails from this address will automatically go to your Trash folder. You can view and manage all your blocked email addresses by going to Settings > Mail > Blocked.
