When your POCO X7 Pro's voice assistant stops responding, it can feel like you've lost a helpful sidekick. Whether you're using Google Assistant or Xiaomi's own Xiao Ai, the sudden silence is a nuisance. The good news is that most of these problems have straightforward fixes you can try right now.

Check Your Voice Assistant Settings

First, you need to confirm which assistant is your default and that it's actually enabled. On the POCO X7 Pro with HyperOS 2, you might have more than one option. Head to Settings > Apps > Default apps and look for the "Digital assistant app" option. Make sure it's set to your preferred service, like Google.

Next, open the Google app or your chosen assistant's own app. Look for the voice settings, often under a profile icon or a "More" tab. Ensure that "Hey Google" or the equivalent wake phrase is toggled on. I've seen this setting get turned off accidentally after a system update more than once.

Retrain the Voice Model

If the assistant activates but doesn't understand you well, or ignores the wake word, retraining it can make a big difference. Your voice or the phone's microphones might just need a refresher.

For Google Assistant, open the Google app, tap your profile picture, go to Settings > Voice > Voice Match. You can delete your existing voice model and set it up again. The phone will ask you to say "Hey Google" and "Ok Google" a few times in a quiet room. This process helps the phone adapt to your specific tone and accent.

Check for Microphone Blockages

The POCO X7 Pro has several microphones for noise cancellation and clear audio. If they're blocked, your assistant can't hear you. Check the small pinhole at the bottom next to the USB-C port and the one near the top of the frame.

Dust or pocket lint can easily get stuck in there. Give them a gentle clean with a soft, dry brush or a blast of compressed air. Also, check if your phone case is covering any of these openings. A poorly designed case is a common culprit for mic issues.

Restart Your Phone

This is the classic fix for a reason. A simple reboot clears out temporary software glitches that can affect system services like the voice assistant. Just press and hold the power button until the power menu appears, then tap "Restart."

If the phone is completely unresponsive, you can perform a force restart. Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds or until you feel the phone vibrate and see the POCO logo appear on screen. This is a hard reset that doesn't erase any data.

Update Your Apps and System

Outdated software is a frequent source of bugs. First, make sure the Google app (or your chosen assistant app) is up to date. Open the Play Store, tap your profile icon, and go to Manage apps & device > Updates available.

Next, check for a system update. HyperOS updates from Xiaomi often include stability patches. Go to Settings > About phone > HyperOS version. If an update is pending, install it while your phone is connected to Wi-Fi and has a good charge, preferably using your 90W HyperCharge adapter.

Review Battery Optimization Settings

Android's battery saver features can sometimes be too aggressive and stop background services. This can prevent the voice assistant from listening for the wake word. Go to Settings > Battery and make sure any power-saving modes like "Battery saver" are turned off for testing.

You can also exempt your assistant app from battery optimization. Go to Settings > Apps, select your assistant app (like Google), tap Battery, and choose "No restrictions." This tells the system to let it run freely in the background.

Check Your Internet Connection

While some basic commands might work offline, most voice assistant features require an active internet connection. The assistant needs to send your voice query to Google's or Xiaomi's servers to process it. Make sure you're connected to Wi-Fi or have mobile data enabled.

Try opening a webpage in your browser to test the connection. If there's an issue, toggle Airplane mode on and off from the quick settings panel. This can reset your network radios and often fixes transient connectivity problems.

Disable Other Listening Features

Certain accessibility or system features can conflict with the "Hey Google" detection. One to check is "Voice Access," which is designed for full phone control by voice. You can find it in Settings > Additional settings > Accessibility. Make sure it's switched off.

Also, if you use any third-party apps that claim to control your phone with voice commands, they might be interfering. Try disabling them temporarily to see if your main assistant starts working again.

Clear the Assistant App's Cache and Data

Corrupted app data can cause all sorts of strange behavior. Clearing the cache is a safe first step that won't delete your personal settings. Go to Settings > Apps, find the Google app (or your assistant app), tap Storage, and then Clear cache.

If the problem persists, you can tap "Clear data" or "Manage space" > "Clear all data." Be aware this will reset the app to its default state, so you'll need to sign back in and set up "Hey Google" again. It's a more thorough refresh that often solves stubborn issues.

Reset All App Preferences

This is a broader fix that resets permissions, default apps, and background restrictions for all applications without deleting any of your personal data like photos or messages. It can resolve conflicts where another app has taken control of the microphone or default assistant role.

To do this, go to Settings > Apps > Reset app preferences. Tap reset and confirm. Afterward, you'll need to grant microphone permission to your assistant app again when you first use it, and re-select it as your default digital assistant app in the settings.
