Getting your new Samsung Galaxy S23 set up with all your old stuff is the first step to enjoying it. Whether you're upgrading from another Samsung, switching from a different Android phone, or making the jump from an iPhone, the process is pretty straightforward once you know which tools to use.

Start with Samsung Smart Switch

The absolute best way to move everything is with Samsung's own Smart Switch app. It's pre-installed on your S23. You can find it by going to Settings > Accounts and backup > Bring data from old device. This will launch Smart Switch and guide you through the connection options.

You have three main choices for the transfer: a wireless connection over Wi-Fi, a direct USB cable link, or using an external storage device like a microSD card as a middleman. For most people, wireless is the most convenient.

If you choose wireless, you'll need the Smart Switch app on your old phone too. You can download it from the Google Play Store or the Galaxy Store. On your old device, open Smart Switch and select Send data, then on your S23, choose Receive data. The app will handle the rest.

For the Fastest Transfer, Use a Cable

If you have a lot of data, especially high-resolution photos and videos from your old phone, using a cable is much quicker. You'll need a USB-C to USB-C cable if both phones have USB-C ports, or a USB-OTG adapter to connect different cable types.

Smart Switch will automatically detect the wired connection. You can then pick and choose exactly what to bring over: your call logs, text messages, home screen layout, and even your Wi-Fi passwords. I'd recommend selecting everything for a true seamless switch.

Moving from an iPhone to Your S23

Switching from iOS? Smart Switch handles that too. On your new Galaxy S23, open Smart Switch and select iPhone/iPad as your source device. You then have two paths: transfer directly via cable or pull data from an iCloud backup.

For the cable method, you'll need a Lightning to USB-C cable. The app will guide you through granting permissions on your iPhone. For iCloud, just sign into your Apple ID within Smart Switch on the S23. It will let you choose which backup to restore from, bringing over your contacts, photos, calendar events, and more.

Keep in mind, iPhone apps won't transfer directly. You'll need to download the Android versions from the Google Play Store and sign in to your accounts within them. Your app data, like game progress, may not carry over unless the app developer supports cross-platform cloud saves.

Restore from a Samsung Cloud Backup

If you were using a Samsung phone before and had backups enabled, you can restore directly from Samsung Cloud. During the initial setup of your S23, you'll be prompted to sign into your Samsung account. Right after that, you should see an option to Restore from Samsung Cloud.

Choose your most recent backup. This will restore your settings, home screen layout, and any data from Samsung apps. It's a great complement to using Smart Switch for a more complete restoration of how your old phone felt.

Let Google Sync Do the Work

A lot of your core information is already tied to your Google account. When you sign into your Google account on your new S23, it will automatically start syncing in the background. This includes your contacts, calendar, Gmail, and Chrome bookmarks.

You can check what's syncing by going to Settings > Accounts and backup > Manage accounts, then tap on your Google account. Make sure all the toggles for the data you want are switched on. This is a good safety net to ensure those essentials are duplicated.

Don't Forget Your App Data

For messaging apps like WhatsApp, you need to use their built-in transfer tool. On your old phone, open WhatsApp, go to Settings > Chats > Chat transfer, and follow the prompts to generate a QR code. Then, on your S23, install WhatsApp, verify your number, and scan that code when prompted to move your chat history.

For other apps, especially games and social media, check their settings for account or cloud backup options. Many games use Google Play Games to save your progress, so just signing in on the new device should restore it.

Final Steps After Everything is Moved

Take some time to scroll through your new S23. Make sure your photos are in the Gallery, your contacts are all there, and your text message threads came over. You'll likely need to log back into some apps, like banking or social media, for security reasons.

Once you're confident the transfer was successful, it's a good idea to wipe your old phone. On most Android devices, you can find the option at Settings > General management > Reset > Factory data reset. This protects your personal information before you sell, trade, or recycle the old device.
