Switching to your new Samsung Galaxy S26+ is a big upgrade, and you shouldn't have to leave your photos, messages, or settings behind. With One UI 8.5, Samsung has made the process incredibly smooth, whether you're coming from an older Galaxy, another Android phone, or even an iPhone. Let's get all your data moved over.

Start with Samsung Smart Switch

This is the best way to move everything in one go. When you first power on your S26+, the setup wizard will prompt you to use Smart Switch. If you've already set it up, you can find it by going to Settings > Accounts and backup > Bring data from old device. You'll have three connection options: wireless, USB cable, or external storage.

For a wireless transfer, you'll need the Smart Switch app on your old phone. If it's not pre-installed, download it from the Google Play Store or Galaxy Store. On your old phone, open Smart Switch and tap Send data, then on your S26+, tap Receive data. Select what you want to transfer and keep the phones close together until it's done.

Use a Cable for Maximum Speed

If you have a lot of data, using a cable is much faster. You'll need a USB-C to USB-C cable to connect the two phones directly. Smart Switch will automatically detect the wired connection. This method is perfect for transferring large video libraries or if you have a spotty Wi-Fi connection.

You can select everything from call logs and messages to your home screen layout. I'd start with this one if you're in a hurry. Just tap through the categories, hit Transfer, and let it work. The S26+'s fast processor makes quick work of it.

Moving from an iPhone

Switching from iOS is straightforward with Smart Switch. On your new S26+, select iPhone/iPad as your source device. You can transfer directly using a cable, you'll need a Lightning to USB-C cable, or pull data from an iCloud backup.

For the iCloud method, just sign into your Apple ID within the Smart Switch app. Choose the backup you want to restore. Your contacts, calendar events, photos, and notes will come over. Remember, iOS apps won't transfer; you'll need to download their Android equivalents from the Play Store afterward.

Restore from a Samsung Cloud Backup

If you've been using a Samsung phone, your old device was likely backing up to Samsung Cloud. During the initial setup of your S26+, sign into your Samsung account. You'll see an option to Restore from Samsung Cloud.

Choose your most recent backup. This will bring back your settings, home screen layout, and even some app data. It's a great complement to a full Smart Switch transfer if you want to ensure your phone feels exactly like your old one.

Let Google Sync Do the Work

Your Google account is the backbone of your Android data. When you sign into your S26+ with your primary Google account, it automatically starts syncing contacts, calendar, Gmail, and Chrome data. To check what's syncing or force a refresh, go to Settings > Accounts and backup > Manage accounts, select your Google account, and tap Sync account.

This is also how game progress and data for many apps are saved. Make sure you're signed into the Google Play Games app on both devices to preserve your achievements and saves.

Transfer WhatsApp Chats

WhatsApp requires a separate, in-app transfer. On your old phone, open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Chats > Chat transfer. Tap Start and then use your S26+ to scan the QR code that appears on the old phone's screen.

Both phones need to be on the same Wi-Fi network for this to work. Your message history and media will transfer directly, so you can pick up right where you left off.

Final Steps After Your Data is Moved

Once the transfer is complete, take a few minutes to check that everything arrived. Open your Gallery, Messages, and Phone apps to verify. Some apps, especially banking and social media apps, will require you to log in again for security.

After you're confident everything is working on your new S26+, you should wipe your old phone. On your old device, go to Settings > General management > Reset > Factory data reset. This protects your personal information before you sell, trade, or recycle the device.
