Switching to your new Samsung Galaxy A36 should be a smooth experience. Whether you're upgrading from an older Samsung, switching from another Android brand, or making the jump from an iPhone, you can move almost everything over without starting from scratch. The key is using the right tools for your specific situation.

Start with Samsung Smart Switch

Samsung's Smart Switch app is the most comprehensive way to move your data. It's pre-installed on your Galaxy A36. To begin, open the app from your app drawer or find it during the initial phone setup process. You'll be prompted to choose your old device type: another Galaxy, an Android phone, or an iPhone/iPad.

For the fastest and most reliable transfer, I'd recommend using a cable. If your old phone has a USB-C port, you can connect it directly to your A36 with a USB-C to USB-C cable. For phones with a different port, you'll need the appropriate USB-OTG adapter that came in the box.

Smart Switch will let you select exactly what to bring over. This includes contacts, messages, call logs, photos, videos, documents, and even your home screen layout. It also transfers your installed apps, though some may need to be downloaded fresh from the Play Store afterward.

Transfer Wirelessly with Smart Switch

If you don't have a cable handy, the wireless option works well too. On your Galaxy A36, open Smart Switch and select "Wireless.” On your old Android phone, you'll need to download the Smart Switch app from the Google Play Store first.

Once both apps are open, select "Send" on the old device and "Receive" on the new A36. The phones will connect directly over Wi-Fi. Keep them within a few feet of each other and don't exit the apps until the process is complete. This method is convenient, though it can be slower than a cable transfer.

Moving from an iPhone to Your A36

Smart Switch handles iPhone transfers seamlessly. When you select iPhone as your source device, you have two main options. The first is to use a cable, which requires a Lightning to USB-C connector. The second, and often easier, method is to transfer directly from an iCloud backup.

For the iCloud method, you'll sign into your Apple ID directly within the Smart Switch app on your Samsung. It will show you a list of your recent iCloud backups. Choose one, and Smart Switch will pull over your contacts, calendar events, photos, and videos. Your text messages (iMessages) will also transfer.

Remember, iOS apps won't transfer because they're built for a different system. You'll need to find and install their Android equivalents from the Google Play Store. Your app data, like game progress, may not transfer unless the app developer supports cross-platform cloud saving.

Sync Everything with Your Google Account

Before you even start the physical transfer, make sure everything on your old phone is syncing to Google. Go to your old device's settings and check that contacts, calendar, and Chrome data are backed up. This creates a safety net.

On your new Galaxy A36, simply sign in with the same Google account during setup. Your synced contacts and calendar events will populate almost instantly. To check or manage what's syncing, go to Settings > Accounts and backup > Manage accounts, tap your Google account, and review the sync settings.

Restore from a Samsung Cloud Backup

If your previous phone was a Samsung and you used Samsung Cloud, restoring is straightforward. During the setup of your A36, you'll be asked to sign into your Samsung account. After signing in, you should see an option to restore data and settings from a Samsung Cloud backup.

Select the most recent backup. This can restore things like your call logs, messages, home screen layout, and even settings that Smart Switch might not cover. It's a great way to make your new A36 feel exactly like your old Samsung.

Transferring WhatsApp Chats

WhatsApp requires a separate, but simple, process. On your old phone, open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Chats > Chat transfer. Tap "Start” and then point your old phone's camera at the QR code that appears on your Galaxy A36's screen during the WhatsApp setup process.

The transfer happens over a local Wi-Fi connection between the two phones, so your chat history never touches a server. Make sure both phones are connected to power, as the process can take a while if you have years of messages and media.

After Your Data is Transferred

Take some time to explore your new Galaxy A36. Check that all your photos are in the Gallery app and your messages are present. You'll likely need to log back into social media, banking, and email apps on the new device for security reasons.

Since the Galaxy A36 doesn't include a charger in the box, I'd recommend using a USB-PD compatible 45W charger to take full advantage of its fast charging. You can also enable battery protection in settings to limit the charge to 85%, which helps with long-term battery health.

Once you're confident everything is working on your new phone, you should wipe your old device. On your old phone, go to its settings, find the reset option (often under "System" or "General management"), and select "Erase all data" or "Factory reset.” This protects your personal information before you sell, trade, or recycle the device.
