Getting your new iPhone 17e up and running with all your stuff from your old phone is a smooth process. Apple has designed the setup to be pretty seamless, whether you're coming from another iPhone or switching from Android. I'd start with the Quick Start method if you have both phones handy, as it's the most straightforward.

Use Quick Start for iPhone-to-iPhone Transfer

This is the fastest way to move everything. Turn on your new iPhone 17e and place it near your old iPhone. You should see a pop-up on your old device asking if you want to set up the new one. Tap Continue and then hold your old phone's camera over the swirling animation on your 17e's screen to scan it.

You'll be prompted to enter your old iPhone's passcode on the new 17e. After setting up Face ID, you'll see an option to Transfer from iPhone. Select that, and keep the two phones close together and plugged into power. The transfer time depends on your data, but with the A19 chip, it's generally efficient, even if the phone might feel a bit warm during the process.

Restore from an iCloud Backup

If your old phone isn't with you or is already reset, restoring from iCloud is your best bet. First, double-check that a recent backup exists on your old device by going to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup.

On your iPhone 17e, follow the setup assistant until you reach the Apps & Data screen. Choose Restore from iCloud Backup, sign in with your Apple ID, and pick the most recent backup. Your data will download over Wi-Fi. Keep the phone connected to power and Wi-Fi until it's done; the new C1X cellular modem helps, but Wi-Fi is still faster for this.

Use a Computer for a Fast, Complete Transfer

For the absolute fastest and most reliable transfer, use a Mac or PC. Connect your old iPhone to your computer using a USB-C cable. On a Mac with macOS Catalina or later, open Finder. On a Windows PC or older Mac, open iTunes. Select your device and click Back Up Now.

It's crucial to check the box for Encrypt local backup to include your passwords and Health data. Once the backup is finished, disconnect the old phone, connect your new iPhone 17e, and select Restore Backup. This cable-based method is much quicker than downloading from iCloud.

Move Your Data from an Android Phone

Switching from Android? Download the Move to iOS app from the Google Play Store on your Android device. On your iPhone 17e, during the initial setup, tap Move Data from Android when you get to the Apps & Data screen.

A numeric code will appear on your iPhone. Enter that code into the Move to iOS app on your Android phone. You can then select what to transfer: contacts, message history, photos, videos, and even your free apps. Keep both phones plugged in and on the same Wi-Fi network until the transfer completes.

Manually Move Specific Items

Maybe you don't need to move everything. For contacts and calendars, ensure they're synced to your iCloud or Google account, then just sign into that account on your new 17e. For photos, turn on iCloud Photos in Settings or use a service like Google Photos.

To move your WhatsApp chats, use the app's own migration tool. Open WhatsApp on your old phone, go to Settings > Chats > Transfer Chats, and follow the prompts to scan a QR code with your new iPhone 17e.

What to Expect After the Transfer

Once the transfer is done, take a moment to check that your key apps are present and working. You'll likely need to re-sign into banking apps, social media, and authenticator apps for security reasons. Your Apple Music library or Spotify playlists will sync, but you may need to re-download songs for offline listening.

When you're completely sure everything is on your new iPhone 17e, you can securely wipe your old phone. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings on the old device.
