Apple's most affordable iPhone could finally match premium models with smooth-scrolling displays as early as 2028, according to supply chain reports from South Korea. The iPhone 19e is rumored to adopt an LTPO OLED panel capable of variable refresh rates between 1Hz and 120Hz. This ProMotion technology has been exclusive to Apple's higher-end devices since its introduction, offering smoother animations and better power efficiency than standard 60Hz displays.
Currently shipping iPhone 17e models use basic 60Hz low-temperature polycrystalline silicon panels, with next year's iPhone 18e expected to maintain the same display specification. The potential upgrade would mark the first time Apple brings variable refresh rate technology to its entry-level smartphone lineup.
ZDNet Korea reports that Apple is developing next-generation LTPO+ display architecture using oxide materials for both switching and driving transistors. This new technology promises improved power efficiency and faster response times compared to current LTPO implementations.
Apple plans to reserve the advanced LTPO+ panels for flagship devices launching in 2028, including rumored foldable iPhones and new iPhone Air models. Standard LTPO displays would then become available for more affordable devices like the iPhone 19e through this trickle-down approach.
The company previously considered adopting LTPO+ technology for its 2027 iPhone lineup but reportedly moved away from the idea due to mass production challenges. Apple first implemented LPTO3 technology in the Apple Watch Series 10 in 2024 using panels supplied by LG Display.
If realized, this display upgrade would fundamentally change expectations for budget smartphones. Customers seeking smoother scrolling and better battery efficiency would no longer need to purchase Pro or Pro Max variants solely for display improvements.
The timing matches Apple's typical three-year upgrade cycle for its entry-level e-series iPhones. The iPhone 17e launched earlier this month, with the iPhone 18e expected in late 2027 before the potentially upgraded iPhone 19e arrives in early 2028.
