Spam calls and unwanted messages can be a real nuisance, even on your iPad mini. While it's not a phone, you can still receive calls and messages through apps like FaceTime, Messages, and third-party services. Blocking contacts here stops them from reaching you across all those apps. Here's how to take control.

Block a Contact from the FaceTime App

If you're getting unwanted FaceTime calls, open the FaceTime app. Find the call in your recent list and tap the (i) info button next to it. Scroll down the info screen and tap Block this Caller. Confirm by tapping Block Contact.

This blocks them from calling you on FaceTime. It also prevents them from sending you iMessages if their contact info is linked. The process is nearly identical if you start from the Contacts app directly.

Block Someone from the Messages App

Open the conversation thread in the Messages app. Tap the contact's name or number at the top of the screen. On the next screen, tap the (i) info button. You'll see the option to Block this Caller near the bottom. Tap it to confirm.

Once blocked, any new iMessages from them will not be delivered to your iPad. You won't get a notification, and the messages won't appear in your list. This block syncs across all your Apple devices signed into the same iCloud account.

View and Manage Your Blocked List

To see everyone you've blocked, go to Settings > FaceTime > Blocked Contacts. This is the master list for your iPad. You can also get there via Settings > Messages > Blocked Contacts; it's the same list.

To unblock someone, tap Edit in the top-right corner of the Blocked Contacts screen. A red minus icon will appear next to each name. Tap the minus icon and then tap Unblock. Tap Done when you're finished.

Filter Unknown Message Senders

For general SMS/iMessage spam, you can filter messages from people not in your contacts. Go to Settings > Messages. Scroll down and turn on Filter Unknown Senders.

With this on, messages from unknown numbers are moved to a separate tab in the Messages app. Your main conversation list stays clean. You can still check the "Unknown Senders" tab periodically in case something legitimate comes through.

Block Email Senders in the Mail App

If you're getting spam in your Mail app, open the email. Tap the sender's name at the top of the message, then tap it again on the contact card that pops up. Select Block this Contact from the menu.

Future emails from this address will go straight to your Trash folder. You can manage all your blocked email addresses by going to Settings > Mail > Blocked.

What Happens When You Block Someone

For FaceTime, a blocked caller will see the call ring once on their end before it goes to voicemail, if you have that set up. They won't receive a specific notification that they are blocked.

For Messages, their iMessages will not be delivered. They won't see a "Delivered" receipt, but they also won't get a failure notice. It will simply seem like you're not responding. SMS messages from blocked numbers are silently filtered and do not appear.

Use Third-Party App Settings

Remember, calls and messages can also come through apps like WhatsApp, Skype, or Signal. Blocking works within each app's own settings. If you're getting spam there, you'll need to open that specific app, find the contact or number, and use its block feature.

The block list in your iPad's Settings only applies to Apple's own services like FaceTime, iMessage, and Phone calls forwarded from your iPhone. I'd check the settings within any messaging app you use frequently.
