Factory resetting your iPad (11th generation) completely erases all your data and settings, returning it to the state it was in when you first took it out of the box. It's a powerful step, but it's often the best way to resolve deep software glitches, prepare the device for a new owner, or simply get a fresh start. Doing it safely means ensuring you don't lose anything important in the process.
Create a Backup Before Anything Else
The most important step is to back up your iPad. I'd start with an iCloud backup. Go to Settings > tap your name at the top > iCloud > iCloud Backup. Make sure iCloud Backup is toggled on, then tap Back Up Now. Stay connected to Wi-Fi until it finishes.
For a more complete local backup, connect your iPad to a Mac or PC with its USB-C cable. On a Mac with macOS Catalina or later, open Finder, select your iPad in the sidebar, and click Back Up Now. On a Windows PC or older Mac, you'll use iTunes. This local backup is a good safety net alongside iCloud.
Sign Out of Your Apple ID and iCloud
This step is non-negotiable if you're giving the iPad away. If you skip it, the Activation Lock will remain active, rendering the tablet useless to anyone else. Go to Settings and tap your Apple ID banner at the very top. Scroll all the way down and select Sign Out.
You'll be asked to enter your Apple ID password to turn off Find My iPad. Confirm you want to keep a copy of your keychain and any relevant data on the iPad, then tap Sign Out again. This disconnects your account from the device.
Perform the Factory Reset from Settings
With your data backed up and your account signed out, you're ready for the reset. Open Settings on your iPad, go to General, and then tap Transfer or Reset iPad. At the bottom, select Erase All Content and Settings.
The iPad will ask for your passcode and may prompt for your Apple ID password one final time to confirm. After you confirm, the erase process begins. Your iPad (11th gen) will restart and show a progress bar. This usually takes just a few minutes. When it's done, you'll see the initial "Hello" setup screen.
Use a Computer for a Forced Reset
If your iPad is unresponsive, locked, or you've forgotten the passcode, you'll need to reset it using a computer. This method, often called a restore, installs a fresh copy of iPadOS. Connect your iPad to a computer with its USB-C cable.

If the computer doesn't recognize the iPad, you'll need to put it into recovery mode first. On your iPad (11th generation), quickly press and release the Volume Up button, then quickly press and release the Volume Down button. Immediately press and hold the Top button. Keep holding it until you see the recovery mode screen (a cable pointing to a computer icon).
Explore Targeted Reset Options
You might not need a full factory reset. For specific issues like Wi-Fi problems, keyboard lag, or home screen layout errors, there are smaller resets that don't touch your personal data. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset.
Here, you can choose to reset only your network settings, keyboard dictionary, home screen layout, or location and privacy settings. These are great first steps for troubleshooting without the commitment of a full wipe.
Restoring Your iPad After the Reset
After the factory reset, your iPad will boot to the initial setup. Follow the on-screen steps to choose your language and connect to a Wi-Fi network. When you reach the Apps & Data screen, select Restore from iCloud Backup or Restore from Mac or PC.
Choose the most recent backup you created. The iPad will download your settings, apps, and data. This restoration process can take a while depending on your internet speed and the size of the backup, so it's best to keep the iPad plugged into power with its 20W USB-C adapter.
When a Factory Reset Is the Right Call
A factory reset is your best tool for solving persistent, unexplained problems like constant app crashes, severe slowdowns, or preparation for selling. For everyday minor glitches, a simple restart, done by holding the Top button and either volume button until you see the power slider, often does the trick. The targeted resets are also a great middle ground before opting for the complete erase.
