Seeing a completely black screen on your Google Pixel 9a is a stressful experience, but it's often a temporary glitch rather than a permanent failure. The phone might be frozen, the battery could be critically low, or a software crash may have locked up the display. I'd start with the simplest solutions first, as they resolve the majority of these black screen issues.
Force Restart Your Pixel 9a
This is almost always the first step you should take. Press and hold the Power button for at least 30 seconds. Keep holding it even if the screen stays dark. You should feel the phone vibrate and eventually see the Google logo appear as it reboots. This process works even if the touchscreen is completely unresponsive, as it forces a hard reboot of the system.
Charge Your Phone Properly
A fully drained battery will show nothing on the screen. Plug your Pixel 9a into a wall outlet using a known-good USB-C cable and a powerful enough charger. For the fastest results, use a USB-PD charger rated for 30W or more, as the phone supports up to 23W wired charging. Leave it plugged in for at least 30 minutes before trying to turn it on again. If you don't see a charging indicator or battery icon after that time, try a different cable and power adapter.
You can also try placing it on a Qi wireless charger, though it's limited to 7.5W and is slower for reviving a dead battery. If the battery was extremely low, enabling Extreme Battery Saver from the power menu after it boots can help stabilize it.
Check for Display or Physical Damage
Inspect the screen closely under a bright light. Look for any new cracks, deep scratches, or unusual dark spots. The Pixel 9a uses Corning Gorilla Glass 3, which is more prone to scratches than newer versions. If the phone still vibrates for notifications, makes sounds, or responds to the "Hey Google" hotword, then the device is on but the display hardware is likely damaged. This would require a screen replacement.
Connect to a Computer for Restoration
If a force restart doesn't work, you can try to revive the phone using a computer. Connect your Pixel 9a to a Windows PC or Mac with a USB-C cable. On your computer, you'll need to use the Android Flash Tool website or platform-specific tools like ADB and Fastboot. If the computer recognizes the device in Fastboot mode, you may be able to re-flash the factory image, which reinstalls Android 15 without necessarily erasing your data if done correctly.
This process is more technical than a simple restart. You'll need to have USB debugging enabled beforehand for some methods, which isn't possible if the screen is already black.
Boot into Recovery Mode
If the phone is stuck in a boot loop or a severe software state, recovery mode can help. First, connect the phone to a charger for a few minutes to ensure it has some power. Then, press and hold the Power and Volume Down buttons together. Hold them until you feel a vibration and the bootloader screen appears, which shows text and an Android robot. Use the volume buttons to navigate to Recovery Mode and press the power button to select it.
From the Android recovery screen, you can try the Wipe cache partition option, which clears temporary system files without touching your personal data. If that fails, Factory data reset is the last resort, which will erase everything on the phone.
Assess for Liquid or Other Damage
If the black screen followed exposure to water or moisture, power the phone off immediately if you can. Let it dry completely in a warm, dry place for at least 48 hours before attempting to turn it on again. Avoid using rice, as the dust can get into the ports. While the Pixel 9a has some water resistance, it's not immune to liquid damage, which can corrode internal connectors, including the one for the display.
