If your brand new Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra is stuck in one orientation, you're not alone. The auto-rotate feature, which relies on the phone's internal sensors, can sometimes get stuck due to a software glitch or a simple setting.

Since this is a 2026 device running One UI 8.5, there's always a chance of an early software bug. I'd start with the quickest fix first, which often solves it right away.

Toggle the Quick Panel Icon

Swipe down from the top of your screen twice to open the full Quick Settings panel. Look for the icon labeled "Portrait" or one that looks like a phone with arrows circling it.

Tap this icon once. It should change color, typically from gray to blue, and the label should switch to "Auto rotate." Try tilting your phone to see if the screen now rotates with it.

Enable Home Screen Rotation

By default, the S26 Ultra's home screen and the phone app screen won't rotate to landscape, even with auto-rotate on. If you want those to rotate too, you need to enable a separate setting.

Tap the text "Portrait" or "Auto rotate" in your Quick Settings panel, not just the icon. In the menu that pops up, make sure the switch for "Home screen and Voice call screen" is turned on.

Force Restart Your S26 Ultra

A simple restart can clear out temporary software hiccups that might be freezing the sensor data. For the Galaxy S26 Ultra, a force restart is straightforward.

Press and hold the Volume Down button and the Side/Power button simultaneously for about 10 seconds. Release the buttons when you see the Samsung logo appear on the screen, then let the phone boot up normally.

Check for App-Specific Behavior

Not every app supports landscape mode. If auto-rotate works perfectly in your camera app or YouTube but fails in your web browser, the issue is likely with that specific app.

Try opening a few different apps to see where the problem occurs. If it's isolated to one app, check that app's settings for a rotation lock option, or try clearing its cache from Settings > Apps.

Update Your Software

Given this is a new model, Samsung is likely releasing updates to squash early bugs. A system update could include a fix for sensor or rotation issues.

Go to Settings > Software update and tap "Download and install." If an update is available, install it and restart your phone to see if rotation behavior improves.

Test the Sensors Directly

Your phone uses an accelerometer and gyroscope to detect movement. You can test these sensors using Samsung's secret diagnostic menu to rule out a hardware fault.

Open your Phone dialer and enter *#0*#. This will launch a test menu. Tap on "Sensor" and then look for an option like "Image Test" or "Gyro Test." Tilt and rotate the phone; the on-screen image or data values should change in real-time if the sensors are working.

Clear the System Cache

Corrupted temporary system files can sometimes cause odd behavior like this. Clearing the cache partition won't delete any of your personal data, photos, or apps.

To do this, power off your S26 Ultra. Then, press and hold the Volume Up and Side/Power buttons together. When you feel a vibration, release the Power button but keep holding Volume Up until you see the Android Recovery screen. Use the volume buttons to navigate to "Wipe cache partition" and select it with the Power button.

Consider a Factory Reset

This is a last resort, but if a deeper software conflict is causing the problem, a factory reset can wipe the slate clean. You must back up all your important data first, as this will erase everything on the phone.

You can initiate this through Settings > General management > Reset > Factory data reset. After the reset is complete, test the auto-rotate function before you start restoring your apps and data, to see if the issue is resolved.
