So your Samsung Galaxy S24 won't charge. You plug it in and nothing happens, or maybe you just get that frustrating "moisture detected" warning. It's a common headache, but the good news is you can almost always fix it yourself without a trip to the repair shop.
Whether you're dealing with a dead battery, a finicky USB-C port, or a setting that's secretly limiting your power, let's walk through the fixes. We'll start with the quickest solutions first.
Force Restart Your Galaxy S24
This should be your very first move. A simple force restart clears out temporary glitches in One UI that can interfere with the charging system. It takes about ten seconds and solves the problem more often than you'd think.
For the Galaxy S24, press and hold the Volume Down button and the Side (power) button together. Keep holding them for about 10 seconds until you feel a vibration and see the Samsung logo appear on the screen.
Once it boots back up, plug in your charger again. Check the bottom of the screen or your always-on display for the charging indicator.
Clean the USB-C Charging Port
This is the single most common fix for any phone that won't charge. Lint, dust, and pocket debris get packed into that tiny USB-C port every single day. Eventually, there's so much gunk that the cable's connector can't make proper contact.
Grab a bright light and look directly into the port on the bottom of your S24. If you see a dark mat of lint, you've found the culprit. Turn the phone off first for safety.
Use a wooden or plastic toothpick to gently scrape the debris out. Avoid metal tools like paperclips, as they can scratch the delicate gold contacts inside. You can also try a quick blast of compressed air from a can, holding it a few inches away.
Check Your Cable, Adapter, and Outlet
You need to figure out if the problem is with your phone or your gear. The best way is to test each component one by one with a known-good replacement.
Try a different USB-C cable first. If you have a Samsung 25W fast charging brick, use it. Also, try plugging the cable into a different wall outlet or even a USB port on your computer. Sometimes the issue is as simple as a faulty power strip.
Remove your phone case, especially if it's very thick or has a magnetic ring for a car mount. These can sometimes prevent the cable from seating fully or interfere with the connection.
Disable Battery Protection and Check for Updates
The Galaxy S24 has a feature designed to extend your battery's long-term health by limiting the maximum charge. If your phone seems to stop charging at 85%, this is almost certainly why.
Go to Settings > Battery and device care > Battery. Tap on "More battery settings" and look for "Protect battery." If this toggle is on, your S24 will stop charging at 85%. Turn it off if you need a full 100% charge for the day ahead.
While you're in settings, check for a software update. Go to Settings > Software update and tap "Download and install." Bugs that affect charging are often patched in One UI updates.
Address the Moisture Detected Warning
This is a known quirk with recent Samsung phones. The moisture detection alert can sometimes trigger even when the port is completely dry, especially after a software update or in humid environments.
If you see the "moisture detected" warning, unplug the cable immediately. The first thing to try is turning the phone off completely and then turning it back on. Once it reboots, try plugging the cable in again.
If that doesn't work, you can try to manually clear the cache that might be causing the false alarm. With the phone on, press and hold the Volume Up and Side buttons until the Samsung logo appears, then release to boot into recovery mode.
Use the volume buttons to navigate to "Wipe cache partition" and press the side button to select it. This doesn't delete any personal data. After it's done, select "Reboot system now."
Try Wireless Charging
If your S24 supports wireless charging, this is a great way to diagnose the problem. The S24 supports standard Qi charging and Samsung's faster 15W wireless charging.
Place your phone on a wireless charger. If it starts charging wirelessly but still won't charge with a cable, you've isolated the issue to the USB-C port or the cable itself. Make sure you're using a compatible Samsung charger to get the full 15W speed.
You can also use Wireless PowerShare to charge another device from your S24. If that feature works, it confirms your phone's battery and charging circuitry are generally functional.
Charge with the Phone Turned Off
Sometimes a background app or process is causing enough battery drain to outpace the incoming charge, making it seem like the phone isn't charging. Turning the phone off eliminates all that activity.
Hold the side button and tap "Power off" on the screen. Once the device is completely off, plug in your charger. You should see a large battery icon appear, indicating it's charging.
Leave it off and plugged in for at least 30 minutes if the battery was completely dead. A deeply drained battery needs a little time on the charger before it will show any signs of life or turn back on.
Consider the Charging Source and Speed
The Galaxy S24 supports 25W Super Fast Charging, but only with a compatible charger. If you're using an old 5W or 10W adapter from an older phone, it will charge, but very slowly.
For the fastest possible charge, you need a USB-C Power Delivery (PD) charger that supports the PPS (Programmable Power Supply) standard, which is what Samsung's 25W technology uses. A generic USB-C charger might only give you standard 15W speeds.
Also, be aware that charging slows down dramatically if the phone gets too hot. If you're fast charging while using the phone for navigation or gaming, it will likely throttle the power to protect the battery.
