When your Roku Ultra gets stuck on the loading screen for Netflix, Hulu, or any other channel, it can completely stop your streaming night. The issue is usually a temporary glitch with the channel itself, your network, or the Roku system software.

Restart the Channel

Press the Home button on your Roku remote to exit the frozen channel. Navigate back to the channel tile on your home screen and launch it again. This simple step clears the channel from the device's active memory and often resolves a temporary hang-up.

Restart Your Roku Ultra

This is the single most effective fix for most software-related problems. Go to Settings > System > System restart. Your Roku will power cycle, which clears its cache and resets all running processes. If the remote is unresponsive, you can also unplug the power cable from the back of the Roku Ultra for 10 seconds, then plug it back in.

Check Your Internet Connection

Channels need a stable connection to load content. From the home screen, go to Settings > Network > Check connection. Your Roku will test the link. If you're using Wi-Fi, try moving the Roku closer to your router or using the built-in Ethernet port on the Ultra for a more reliable wired connection.

I've found the Ethernet port to be the most consistent way to stream, especially if your Wi-Fi is congested. Just make sure you're using a known-good cable, as some cheaper cables can cause intermittent dropouts.

Update the Channel

Outdated channels can have bugs that prevent them from loading. From the home screen, highlight the problematic channel, press the Star (*) button on your remote, and select Check for updates. If an update is available, it will install automatically. You should do this for all your channels periodically.

Update Your Roku Software

An outdated Roku OS can cause compatibility issues with newer channel versions. Your Roku typically updates automatically, but you can manually check. Go to Settings > System > System update > Check now. Install any available updates and restart if prompted.

Remove and Re-add the Channel

This gives you a completely fresh install. Highlight the channel on your home screen, press the Star (*) button, and select Remove channel. Confirm the removal. Then, go to the Roku Channel Store, search for the channel, and select Add channel to reinstall it. You'll need to sign back in.

Clear the Roku's Cache with a Secret Menu

Roku has a hidden sequence that can clear various system caches. Press the Home button five times, then press Up once, then Rewind twice, then Fast Forward twice. Your Roku will restart after a moment. This doesn't delete your channels or accounts, but it can clear out corrupted temporary data causing issues.

Check if the Streaming Service is Down

Sometimes the problem isn't your Roku at all. If a specific channel like Disney+ or Max won't load, the service's servers might be having issues. Check a site like Downdetector.com or the service's official X (Twitter) account for outage reports. If there's a widespread problem, you'll just have to wait it out.

Check Your Network's DNS Settings

Sometimes, slow or unreliable DNS servers from your Internet Provider can cause channels to time out. You can change them on your Roku. Go to Settings > Network > select your connection > Advanced settings > DNS. Change it from Automatic to Manual and try a public DNS like Google's (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4).

Perform a Factory Reset

If every channel is failing to load and nothing else works, a factory reset is the final step. This will erase all settings, logged-in accounts, and channel preferences, returning your Roku Ultra to its out-of-the-box state. You can do this via Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Factory reset.

Alternatively, there's a physical reset button pinhole on the back or bottom of the Roku Ultra. Press and hold this button for about 20 seconds until the status light blinks rapidly. Be prepared to go through the initial setup process again, including re-adding all your channels.
