When you open the Pixel Buds Pro 2 case and the LED keeps pulsing without ever connecting, the buds are stuck broadcasting a pairing signal. They're waiting for a device to pick up the handshake, and something is blocking it from completing. The fix usually comes down to clearing whatever's holding up that connection.
Wake the Phone and Open the Pixel Buds App
The Pixel Buds Pro 2 rely on a handshake with the Pixel Buds app to finish pairing. If your phone is locked, asleep, or the app isn't running, the buds never get the confirmation they need. Unlock your phone, pull up the Pixel Buds app, and hold the open case within a few feet.
Make sure Bluetooth is on and the phone isn't actively connected to another audio device. If it's streaming to a speaker or car kit, the buds won't get a word in. Kill any active Bluetooth connections in Settings > Connected devices and try again.
Forget the Buds in Bluetooth Settings
A stale pairing record is one of the most common reasons the buds stay stuck in pairing mode. The phone thinks it already knows these earbuds, so it ignores the fresh advertising signal. Open Settings > Connected devices > Bluetooth. Find your Pixel Buds Pro 2 in the saved devices list, tap the gear icon next to them, and select Forget.
Now close the case, wait ten seconds, and open it again near your unlocked phone. The Pixel Buds app should see them as brand new and prompt you to pair. This clears up about half of stuck-pairing cases on its own.
Reset the Pixel Buds Pro 2
If forgetting doesn't work, a full factory reset usually does. Put both earbuds in the case and leave the lid open. Press and hold the button on the back of the case for a full 30 seconds until the front LED flashes orange. That's your confirmation that the internal pairing data is wiped clean.
After the reset, the case returns to normal pairing mode, but now from a completely clean slate. The Tensor A1 chip rebuilds the connection state fresh, so the next device you bring near should pair without issues.
Try Pairing to a Different Phone
This is a useful diagnostic step. If you have another phone handy, install the Pixel Buds app on it and try pairing the buds there. They'll work with any Android phone running 6.0 or newer, and even with iPhones through the same app. If they pair instantly on the second phone, the problem is specific to your original phone's Bluetooth stack or app settings.
Check for Find My Device Activation Lock
If you bought the Pixel Buds Pro 2 used, they may be locked to the previous owner's Google account through the Find My Device network. Google added this protection to prevent stolen earbuds from being paired to a different account. In this state, the buds will keep advertising for a connection but refuse every pairing attempt.
The previous owner has to open the Find My Device app, select these Pixel Buds Pro 2, and remove them from their account. Until that happens, they stay locked. There's no workaround on your end, the original account holder has to release them.
Turn Off Multipoint Temporarily
The Pixel Buds Pro 2 have a known quirk where multipoint connections can get confused, especially when switching between apps or between two paired devices. If the buds are trying to connect to both your phone and a tablet at the same time, the handshake can hang indefinitely. Open the Pixel Buds app, go to Sound > Multipoint, and toggle it off.
With multipoint disabled, the buds focus on a single source. This simplifies the pairing process and often lets the connection complete when nothing else would. You can turn multipoint back on after they're connected.
Pair One Bud at a Time
If the case is pulsing and nothing seems to work, try a single-bud pairing. Drop one earbud into the case and close the lid. Leave the lid open with the other earbud still inside. Open the case near your unlocked phone. A stuck stereo handshake sometimes breaks when only one bud is broadcasting. Once that single bud pairs, drop it back in and take the other one out to repeat the process. The buds sync back into stereo immediately after.
