A blinking white light on the Pixel Buds A-Series case means the buds are stuck in pairing mode, actively broadcasting for a device to connect to. The light keeps flashing because no handshake ever completes, and the fix is figuring out what's blocking that connection from happening.

The quickest way to snap out of it is to make sure your phone is unlocked and within a few feet of the open case. Pairing mode is an invitation, not a command, and the Pixel Buds app won't pop up the setup card if the phone is locked or Bluetooth is off. Wake the phone, unlock it, and hold the case open nearby for about 10 seconds.

Check That Bluetooth Is Actually On

This sounds basic, but it's the first thing to verify. Open Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences > Bluetooth and confirm the toggle is enabled. If you see other Bluetooth devices responding in the list, Bluetooth is working fine. If the screen looks frozen or no devices show up, toggle Bluetooth off and back on, then try again.

You can also swipe down from the top of the screen and check the Bluetooth Quick Setting tile. If it's grayed out, tap it once to enable it.

Restart Your Phone

A stuck Bluetooth stack on the phone side is a surprisingly common reason the Pixel Buds A-Series never complete the pairing handshake. A full restart clears that state without losing any data.

On most Android phones, hold the power button for a few seconds, then tap Restart. If you have a Pixel, hold the power and volume up buttons together, then select Restart from the menu. Once the phone boots back up, unlock it and bring the open case nearby.

Forget the Buds From Bluetooth First

If you've paired these Pixel Buds A-Series to your phone before, the old pairing record can interfere with a fresh connection. Open Settings > Connected devices, find your Pixel Buds in the list, tap the gear icon next to them, then tap Forget or Unpair. Confirm the action.

Now close the case lid, wait 10 seconds, then open it again near your unlocked phone. The phone should see the buds as new and prompt you to connect.

Reset the Pixel Buds A-Series

If forgetting the device didn't do it, a full reset will clear the internal pairing state on the buds themselves. Put both earbuds in the charging case and leave the lid open. Press and hold the button on the back of the case for a full 30 seconds. The status light will flash white, then eventually blink amber. Keep holding through the whole thing. When the light finally flashes white again, the reset is complete.

After the reset, the case returns to the same flashing-white pairing state but now from a clean slate. Bring it near your unlocked phone and the setup prompt should appear in the Pixel Buds app.

This doesn't delete any data from your phone. It just clears the buds' memory of previous connections.

Check the Pixel Buds App for a Firmware Update

Outdated firmware is a known trigger for erratic behavior on the Pixel Buds A-Series, including stuck pairing mode. The Pixel Buds app handles all firmware updates, and if the buds are already listed there, you can check for updates directly.

Open the Pixel Buds app, tap the gear icon for your buds, then look under More settings > Firmware update. If an update is available, let it install with the buds in the case and the case connected to power. After the update completes, close the case, wait 30 seconds, and try pairing again.

If the buds aren't showing up in the app at all, that's a clue the connection is truly broken and a reset is needed first.

Try Pairing to a Different Phone

Bring the open case near a different phone or tablet running Android 6.0 or newer. The Pixel Buds A-Series use standard Bluetooth, so they'll pair with just about anything. If they connect successfully to the second device, the problem is with your original phone's Bluetooth stack, not the buds.

If they won't pair to any device at all, the buds themselves may have a hardware fault. This is less common with the A-Series, but the case sensor can occasionally fail to register the buds are inside, which keeps the pairing loop going. Try cleaning the charging contacts on both the buds and the case with a dry cotton swab before assuming the worst.

Pair One Bud at a Time

If the case keeps flashing white and no phone sees the buds, try pulling out just one bud and leaving the other in the case with the lid open. Bring the single bud near your unlocked phone. A stuck stereo handshake sometimes resolves when only one bud is broadcasting its pairing signal.

Once that first bud pairs successfully, drop it back in the case, take out the second bud, and bring it near the phone. The buds will automatically sync with each other as a pair on the next open. This trick works because the A-Series store pairing data independently in each bud, and clearing one side's state can break the logjam.
