So your Nothing Phone 2a won't charge. You've plugged it in, maybe swapped the cable, and the screen stays dark. It's a frustrating spot to be in, but this is almost always something you can fix yourself without needing a repair shop.
Whether the USB-C port feels loose, the Glyph lights on the back refuse to pulse, or the phone just sits there completely dead, we'll walk through the solutions. Let's start with the quickest fix and work our way through.
Force Restart Your Phone 2a
This should always be your first move. A simple force restart can clear out a temporary software glitch that's preventing the charging circuit from engaging. It takes about 15 seconds.
For the Nothing Phone 2a, press and hold the Power button for 10 to 15 seconds. Keep holding it until you see the Nothing logo appear on the screen, then you can let go. Once it boots back up, plug it in and check if the charging icon shows up or if the Glyph interface lights up.
Inspect and Clean the USB-C Port
This is the single most common fix for any phone with a charging issue. Over months of use, pocket lint, dust, and debris get packed into the USB-C port. Eventually, there's so much gunk that the cable's connector can't reach the contacts inside.
Grab a bright light and look directly into the port on the bottom of your Phone 2a. If you see a mat of grey or black lint, that's your problem. Turn the phone off first for safety. Then, take a wooden or plastic toothpick and gently scrape along the bottom and sides of the port to loosen the debris.
Avoid using anything metal, like a paperclip, as it can scratch or short the delicate pins. You can also try a quick blast of compressed air from a can, holding it a few inches away. Give the phone a gentle tap with the port facing down to dislodge anything stubborn.
Test a Different Cable and Charger
You need to figure out if the issue is with your phone or your accessories. The best way is to swap each component one by one. Start by trying a different USB-C cable that you know works.
Then, try a different wall adapter. The Phone 2a supports up to 45W charging, but it requires a USB-C Power Delivery (PD) 3.0 compatible charger to hit that speed. If you're using an old or low-wattage brick, it might charge extremely slowly or not at all.
Finally, plug into a different wall outlet. Also, try removing your phone case, as a thick or misaligned case can sometimes prevent the USB-C cable from being fully inserted.
Check the Glyph Interface for Clues
Your Nothing Phone 2a has a unique feature that can help diagnose charging. The Glyph Interface LEDs on the back should pulse with a white light when the phone is plugged in and charging properly.
If you plug in the cable and those lights do nothing, it's a strong sign that power isn't getting to the phone at all. This points to a cable, charger, or port issue. If the Glyph lights come on but the screen stays black, the phone might be charging but is stuck in a deep sleep state, which the force restart should fix.
Wait Out a Fully Drained Battery
If you let the battery run down to absolute zero, the Phone 2a might not show any signs of life immediately when you plug it in. This is normal behavior for lithium-ion batteries.
Leave it connected to a known-good wall charger (not a slow computer USB port) for at least 30 minutes. Don't touch it or try to turn it on during this time. After a half-hour, check for the Glyph lights or try holding the power button. It might just need a little juice before it can wake up.
Update Nothing OS
Software bugs can occasionally interfere with power management. Nothing releases updates that often include fixes for these kinds of issues. Make sure your Phone 2a is running the latest version of Nothing OS.
Go to Settings > System > System update and tap "Check for update." If an update is available, download and install it. It's a good idea to plug your phone in during this process to ensure it doesn't run out of power.
Charge with the Phone Powered Off
Sometimes a background app or process can cause enough system strain to interfere with normal charging. To rule this out, turn your Phone 2a completely off.
Hold the power button, then tap "Power off" on the screen. Once it's off, plug in your charger. If the Glyph lights start pulsing, you'll know it was a software-related issue preventing the charge. You can then turn the phone back on while it's plugged in.
A Note on Charging Specs and Known Issues
The Nothing Phone 2a charges via USB-C only; it does not support any form of wireless charging. To get the full 45W speed, you need to use a compatible USB-C PD 3.0 charger. Using a basic 10W or 15W charger will work, but it will be much slower.
Some users have reported that certain third-party cables, even USB-C ones, don't handshake properly with the Phone 2a. I'd recommend sticking with the cable that came in the box or a high-quality, reputable brand. Also, be aware that if the phone gets too hot, it will automatically slow or stop charging to protect the battery, which is a standard safety feature.
Perform a Factory Reset (Last Resort)
If you've tried every other step and the phone still won't charge reliably, a software corruption might be the root cause. A factory reset will wipe your phone back to its original settings, so this is a last resort. Make sure you have a recent backup of your data before proceeding.
You can do this through the settings if your phone is still operational. Go to Settings > System > Reset options > Erase all data (factory reset). If the phone won't turn on at all, you can try entering Recovery Mode. With the phone off, press and hold the Volume Up and Power buttons together until the recovery menu appears, then use the volume keys to navigate to "Wipe data/factory reset."
