Sony announced Kena: Scars of Kosmora at its February 12 State of Play presentation, marking the first sequel to 2021's acclaimed Kena: Bridge of Spirits. The game launches on PlayStation 5 and PC in 2026.
Developer Ember Lab returns with a more experienced Kena, now established as a known Spirit Guide. The sequel follows the protagonist to the island of Kosmora, where she seeks answers about a personal affliction that has troubled her throughout life.
Kena's journey takes a dramatic turn early in Scars of Kosmora when a powerful spirit shatters her staff. This core tool defined her identity and combat style in Bridge of Spirits. Without it, Kena must adopt Kosmora's forgotten form of Spirit Guiding, which uses alchemy to manipulate elemental powers.
The game expands significantly from its predecessor's linear structure. Kosmora features a larger, more varied setting with distinct cultures and regions built around mysteries tied to a tragic past.
Locations are substantially larger than anything in the original game, though Ember Lab has clarified the game is not specifically open-world but rather features tightly designed regions.
Combat evolves with new elemental systems, tactical choices, and aerial gameplay. Kena gains elemental spirit companions, each linked to a specific element and connected to other spirits across the world. These companions evolve over time, unlocking new powers as their bond with Kena grows.
A fox-like mount shown in the trailer suggests expanded traversal options. The game's scope has increased enough to warrant riding mechanics, according to early footage that also shows larger boss designs.
"Our partnership with PlayStation Studios has allowed us to expand our scope while still staying true to what made the first game special," said Ember Lab co-founder Josh Grier.
Scars of Kosmora follows Bridge of Spirits' timed console exclusivity model. It will launch simultaneously on PlayStation 5 and PC, with the PS5 version receiving temporary exclusivity. Ember Lab maintains its independent status while benefiting from PlayStation Studios partnership support.
The original Kena: Bridge of Spirits won Best Independent Game and Best Debut Indie Game at The Game Awards 2021, earning a Best Art Direction nomination. The sequel carries significant expectations from its award-winning predecessor.
No specific release date has been announced beyond the 2026 window. Ember Lab plans to reveal more details later this year.
