Screen flickering on a brand new iPhone 17 Air is frustrating, especially when you’re expecting flawless performance. The display might flash, show horizontal lines, or dim and brighten erratically. Most of the time this is a software glitch, and you can fix it in a few minutes.
Force Restart the Phone
Start with a force restart. This clears any stuck processes without erasing data. On the iPhone 17 Air, quickly press and release the Volume Up button, then the Volume Down button, then press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo. Wait for the phone to reboot and check if the flickering stops.
Turn Off Auto-Brightness
Auto-brightness relies on the ambient light sensor, and a glitchy sensor can cause the screen to flicker. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size and toggle off Auto-Brightness. Then set your preferred brightness manually in Settings > Display & Brightness.
Disable True Tone and Night Shift
True Tone adjusts color and brightness based on room light, and it can sometimes cause subtle flickering if the sensor misbehaves. Head to Settings > Display & Brightness and turn off True Tone. Also toggle off Night Shift temporarily, since its schedule-based shift can create a flicker effect.
Update iOS to the Latest Version
Apple regularly patches display bugs in iOS updates. Your iPhone 17 Air runs iOS 26, and there might be a newer build that addresses screen flickering. Go to Settings > General > Software Update and install any available update. Restart the phone afterward.
Check for Problematic Background Apps
A misbehaving app can lock the GPU in a bad state and cause flickering. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause to open the App Switcher. Swipe up on each card to close all apps. If the flickering stops, reopen apps one by one to find the culprit.
Reset All Settings
This won’t erase your photos, messages, or apps, but it resets display settings, Wi-Fi passwords, and more. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings. Your phone will restart, and you’ll need to reconnect to Wi-Fi and set brightness preferences again. It often clears configuration glitches that cause flickering.
Disable Reduce White Point
This accessibility setting dims bright colors and can interact oddly with the PWM of the OLED display. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size and turn off Reduce White Point if it’s enabled.
Inspect for Physical Damage
If the flickering started after dropping the phone or pressing on the screen, the display cable might be loose or the panel could be damaged. Look for cracks, discolored spots, or a slight bulge. The iPhone 17 Air has a very thin design, so even a small impact can affect the screen. Physical damage requires a repair from Apple.
Restore the iPhone as New
If none of the above work, back up your data to iCloud or a computer, then do a full restore. Connect the iPhone 17 Air to a computer with Finder (macOS) or iTunes (Windows), select your phone, and click Restore iPhone. This wipes everything and installs a fresh copy of iOS 26. If the flickering stops during the setup process, the problem was software. If it continues immediately on a clean install, the display hardware needs service.
