Seeing that update progress bar stuck on your iPhone 16 screen is a real headache. Whether it's frozen at "Preparing Update," stuck on the Apple logo, or just refusing to download from the start, here are the steps to get iOS 26 installed.

Force Restart Your iPhone 16

This is the first thing to try. It clears out any temporary software glitch that's blocking the update process. On your iPhone 16, quickly press and release the Volume Up button, then quickly press and release the Volume Down button. Finally, press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo appear, then let go.

Check Your Wi-Fi and Internet

iOS updates won't download over cellular, so a solid Wi-Fi connection is non-negotiable. Open Safari and try loading a website to test it. If it's slow, restart your router by unplugging it for 30 seconds. I'd also avoid public networks, as they often block the large data packets needed for an update download.

Free Up a Lot of Storage

Your iPhone 16 needs breathing room. A full iOS 26 update can require over 6 GB of free space. Head to Settings > General > iPhone Storage to see what's available. The quickest win is to offload unused apps, which removes the app but keeps its documents and data.

You can also review large video files or message attachments. Once you've cleared enough space, go back to Settings > General > Software Update and try the download again.

Delete the Corrupted Update File

If a previous download attempt failed, the partial file can block new ones. Go back into Settings > General > iPhone Storage and scroll down. Look for an entry labeled "iOS 26" or similar. Tap on it and select Delete Update to remove the corrupted data.

After it's gone, return to the Software Update screen. Your iPhone 16 will now attempt to download a fresh, clean copy of the update files.

Reset Your Network Settings

This fixes deeper connection problems that a simple restart won't touch. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset. Tap on Reset Network Settings. You'll need to re-enter your Wi-Fi password afterward.

This clears all network configurations and reconnects you fresh, which often resolves download stalls and "Unable to Check for Update" errors.

Update Using a Computer

When the over-the-air update just won't cooperate, using a Mac or PC is your best bet. Connect your iPhone 16 to your computer with a USB-C cable. On a Mac with macOS Catalina or later, open Finder. On a Windows PC or older Mac, open iTunes.

Select your iPhone and click Check for Update, then Download and Update. This method downloads the update to your computer first, then installs it directly to the phone, bypassing any storage or Wi-Fi issues on the device itself.

Check Apple's Server Status

Sometimes, the problem isn't on your end. During a major iOS launch, Apple's servers can get overwhelmed. Pull out another device and visit apple.com/support/systemstatus. Look for the "iOS Software Update" service.

If it shows a yellow or red indicator, there's a widespread issue. All you can do is wait a few hours and try the update again later when server load has decreased.

Try Updating at an Off-Peak Time

If the system status page looks green but you're still having trouble, it could just be high traffic. Try initiating the update very early in the morning or late at night. Fewer people downloading means a faster, more reliable connection for your iPhone 16.

Ensure Your iPhone is Compatible

This is a quick check, but it's worth confirming. iOS 26 supports the iPhone 16, of course, but if you're managing an older device, it might not be eligible. You can verify your model in Settings > General > About.

For the iPhone 16, the update will appear. If you're troubleshooting for an older phone and the update isn't showing, it may simply not be on the supported devices list for iOS 26.
