If your iPhone 16 isn't buzzing for calls or notifications, it's a surprisingly common hiccup. The good news is that it's almost always a software or settings issue you can fix yourself in a few minutes.

Force Restart Your iPhone

This is the universal first step for any weird iPhone behavior, including a silent vibration motor. It clears out temporary glitches without touching your data. On the iPhone 16, you'll quickly press and release the Volume Up button, then press and release the Volume Down button. Finally, press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo appear on the screen.

Wait for the phone to reboot completely. Once it's back on, test the vibration by toggling the Ring/Silent switch on the side. You should feel a distinct buzz if it's working.

Check the Ring/Silent Switch

It sounds obvious, but it's the most common reason for missed vibrations. Look at the switch on the left side of your iPhone 16. If you see an orange stripe, the phone is in Silent mode. In this mode, it won't vibrate for calls, only for alarms and timers.

Flip the switch so the orange stripe is no longer visible. You should feel a vibration as you do this. Now, try calling your phone from another device to see if the vibration for calls has returned.

Verify Sound and Vibration Settings

Head into your Settings app and tap on Sounds & Haptics. First, make sure the Vibrate toggles are turned on. You'll want to check both Vibrate on Ring and Vibrate on Silent depending on how you use your phone.

While you're here, scroll down to the Ringer and Alerts section. Drag the slider to adjust the volume, ensuring it's not all the way down. Sometimes, if the system volume is at zero, it can affect haptic feedback. I'd also give the Change with Buttons toggle a quick check.

Test and Adjust Haptic Strength

Your iPhone 16 uses advanced haptic engines, not a simple vibration motor. Their strength can be adjusted. Go back to Settings > Sounds & Haptics and scroll all the way to the bottom. Tap on Keyboard Feedback.

Make sure Haptic is turned on here. If it is, return to the main Sounds & Haptics screen. At the very top, you'll find a slider for Haptic Strength. Slide it all the way to the right for the strongest feedback. Test it by using the toggle switches on the screen.

Review Focus Mode Settings

Focus modes in iOS 26 are powerful but can silently filter out vibrations. Swipe down from the top-right corner to open the Control Center and see if any Focus icon (like a moon for Do Not Disturb) is active. Tap it to turn it off.

If vibration is still missing for specific people or apps, you need to dig deeper. Open Settings > Focus. Select the Focus mode you use most often, like Do Not Disturb or Personal. Tap on Apps or People and make sure your important contacts and messaging apps are allowed to notify you.

Check App-Specific Notification Settings

Sometimes the system is set correctly, but an individual app has its vibrations disabled. Open Settings and scroll down to the app giving you trouble, like Messages or WhatsApp. Tap on it, then select Notifications.

Ensure notifications are allowed at the top. Then, tap on the specific notification type, such as "Messages" for the Messages app. Look for the Sounds or Haptics section and make sure a haptic pattern is selected. It shouldn't say "None."

Update iOS

A software bug in iOS 26 could be responsible. Apple frequently releases updates that squash these kinds of glitches. Connect your iPhone 16 to Wi-Fi and plug it into power. Open Settings > General > Software Update.

If an update is available, tap Download and Install. I've seen minor point updates resolve haptic issues that appeared after a major OS upgrade. Let the update complete and then test your vibration again.

Reset All Settings

If you've checked everything and the vibration is still dead, this is a strong next step. It will reset all your preferences, like wallpaper, network settings, and privacy permissions, back to factory defaults without erasing any of your personal data, photos, or apps.

Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone. Tap on Reset and then choose Reset All Settings. You'll need to enter your passcode. After the phone restarts, you'll need to reconfigure things like Wi-Fi passwords and Face ID, but it often clears persistent software conflicts.
