When your iPhone 16 Pro stops recognizing your fingerprint, it locks you out of more than just your home screen. You can't approve app purchases, use password managers, or quickly access secure notes. The good news is this is almost always a software hiccup you can fix yourself in a few minutes.

Clean Your Screen and Finger

Start with the simplest fix. The under-display sensor on your iPhone 16 Pro needs a clear view of your fingerprint. Any smudge, oil, or lotion on your screen or finger can block it.

Wipe the top third of your screen with a soft, dry microfiber cloth. Then, make sure your finger is clean and completely dry. I've found that even a tiny bit of hand sanitizer residue is enough to cause a failed read.

Force Restart Your iPhone 16 Pro

A quick force restart clears out temporary glitches that can confuse the Touch ID system. It's different from a normal restart and works when your phone is acting up.

Here’s the sequence for the iPhone 16 Pro: quickly press and release the Volume Up button, then quickly press and release the Volume Down button. Finally, press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo appear, then let go.

Re-register Your Problem Finger

If a restart doesn't help, the next step is to delete and re-add your fingerprint. This gives the sensor a fresh, clean scan to work with. Go to Settings > Touch ID & Passcode and enter your passcode.

Tap on the fingerprint that’s giving you trouble, then tap Delete Fingerprint. Now, tap Add a Fingerprint and follow the on-screen prompts. Press lightly and slowly rotate your finger to capture the edges.

Add the Same Finger Twice

This is a classic trick that often improves reliability. Register the same finger as two separate fingerprints. For instance, add your right thumb once as "Thumb 1," then immediately add it again as "Thumb 2."

This gives the system more data points and angles to recognize you from. Try scanning your finger at a slightly different angle during the second registration for the best coverage.

Check for a Software Update

Apple frequently releases iOS updates that include fixes for sensor performance and security. An outdated version of iOS 26 could be the culprit. Go to Settings > General > Software Update.

If an update is available, tap Download and Install. Make sure your phone is connected to Wi-Fi and has at least 50% battery, or is plugged into a charger. A 30W USB-C charger will get this done the fastest.

Test Without a Screen Protector

Not all screen protectors play nicely with under-display fingerprint sensors. If you recently applied a new one, it might be the issue. Try carefully removing the protector temporarily and testing Touch ID.

If it works without the protector, you'll need to look for a protector specifically marketed as "Touch ID compatible" for the iPhone 16 Pro. Re-register your fingerprints after applying the new one.

Check Your Finger's Condition

Your actual fingerprint can change slightly. Dry, cracked skin, minor cuts, or calluses from activities like gardening or guitar playing can alter the ridges the sensor reads.

If your skin is very dry, try using a little hand lotion (and wipe your finger clean afterward). You may need to temporarily use your passcode and re-register that finger once the skin heals or softens.

Disable Attention Aware Features

This one is less common but worth a shot. Go to Settings > Face ID & Attention. Try turning off Attention Aware Features.

This setting dims the screen and lowers alert volumes if you're not looking at the phone. In some cases, it can interfere with the sensor activation. Test your fingerprint, and you can always turn it back on later.

Reset All Settings

This is a bigger step, but it won't delete your personal data like photos or messages. It resets all your system settings, Wi-Fi passwords, wallpaper, display brightness, back to default, which can clear a deeper software conflict.

Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset. Then, choose Reset All Settings. You'll need to re-enter your Wi-Fi passwords and reconfigure things like notifications afterward.

Try a Different Finger

As a final diagnostic step, try registering a finger you don't normally use, like your index finger. Go through the full setup process in Settings > Touch ID & Passcode.

If the new finger registers and works perfectly every time, the issue is likely with your original finger's condition or its specific scan data. If the new finger also fails consistently, it points more strongly to a system-wide software or rarer hardware issue.
