A black screen on your iPhone 16 can be a real scare, but it's often a temporary glitch rather than a permanent failure. The phone might be on and running with a frozen display, or a software crash in iOS 26 could be causing the issue. Let's walk through the steps to get your screen back.

Force Restart Your iPhone 16

This is almost always the first move. The process for the iPhone 16 is quick. Press and release the Volume Up button, then press and release the Volume Down button, then press and hold the Side button.

Keep holding it even if the screen stays black for 10 to 15 seconds. You'll know it's working when you see the Apple logo appear. This force restart can clear out a software hang that's making the screen go dark.

Charge the Device Thoroughly

A totally dead battery will show nothing. Grab your USB-C cable and a power adapter that can deliver at least 20W to get a decent charge speed. Plug it in and leave it alone for a good 30 minutes.

If you don't see the charging indicator after that time, try a different cable and wall adapter. I'd recommend using an MFi-certified USB-C cable, as some third-party ones can have charging detection issues, especially after major iOS updates.

Check Your Screen and Charging Settings

It sounds simple, but make sure your screen brightness isn't just all the way down. You can ask Siri to "turn up the brightness" if your phone is responsive. Also, take a look in Settings > Battery > Charging.

If a charge limit is enabled, your phone might stop charging at 80%, which could be misleading if you thought it was dead. You can temporarily turn this off to see if the battery fills up completely.

Inspect for Physical Issues

Look at the screen under a light for any cracks, deep scratches, or unusual dark spots. If your phone still vibrates for notifications, makes sounds, or responds to "Hey Siri," then the device is on but the display itself might be damaged.

Also, check the USB-C port. Lint and debris can build up over time and prevent the cable from making a proper connection. Gently clean it out with a dry, soft-bristled brush or a toothpick.

Try a Computer Restore

If a force restart didn't help, connect your iPhone 16 to a Mac or PC with a USB-C cable. On a Mac with macOS Catalina or later, open Finder. On a Windows PC or older Mac, open iTunes.

If your computer recognizes the phone, it will give you options. Always choose Update first. This reinstalls iOS 26 without touching your personal data. It's the safest next step.

Use Recovery Mode

When your computer doesn't see the iPhone at all, recovery mode is the next step. Connect it to your computer with the cable. Then, quickly press and release the Volume Up button, press and release the Volume Down button, and then immediately press and hold the Side button.

Don't let go when you see the Apple logo. Keep holding until you see the recovery mode screen, which shows a cable pointing to a computer icon. Your computer will then prompt you to Update or Restore.

Attempt a DFU Mode Restore

DFU mode is the most thorough software restore you can do. It's a bit more involved. Connect your iPhone 16 to your computer. Press and release the Volume Up button, then press and release the Volume Down button. Now, press and hold the Side button for 10 seconds.

After 10 seconds, while still holding the Side button, also press and hold the Volume Down button for 5 seconds. Then, release only the Side button, but keep holding the Volume Down button for another 10 seconds. If done correctly, the screen will remain completely black, but your computer should detect a device in recovery.

Consider Charging Accessories

If you use MagSafe, alignment is key. Thick cases or metal rings from other accessories can prevent the charger from connecting properly. Try removing the case and placing the charger directly on the back of the phone, making sure the magnets click into place.

Also, some older Qi chargers that aren't Qi2-certified might not work as reliably with the iPhone 16. For the fastest, most consistent wireless charge, stick with a MagSafe or Qi2-certified charger.

Look for Signs of Liquid Exposure

If the black screen happened after your phone got wet, moisture could be interfering with the internal connectors. The first thing to do is power it off if you can, then let it dry completely in a well-ventilated area for at least 24 to 48 hours.

Avoid using heat sources like hair dryers, and don't put it in rice. The dust from rice can get inside and cause more problems. If the screen doesn't return after it's fully dry, the liquid contact indicators inside the phone have likely been triggered, indicating a need for service.
