When your iPhone 15's fingerprint unlock stops working, it's a real hassle. You're left tapping in your passcode every time, which defeats the whole purpose of having Face ID or Touch ID. I've found this usually comes down to a few specific settings or a minor software hiccup that's easy to sort out.

Let's start with the quickest fix. A simple force restart can clear out temporary glitches that might be confusing the biometric system. On your iPhone 15, you do this by quickly pressing and releasing the Volume Up button, then quickly pressing and releasing the Volume Down button. Finally, press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo appear, then let go.

Clean the Screen and Your Fingers

This sounds obvious, but it's the most common culprit. The TrueDepth camera system for Face ID, or the Touch ID sensor if you're using an accessory, needs a clear view. Smudges, lotion, or moisture on your screen or your fingers can block the infrared dots or confuse the capacitive sensor.

Grab a soft, lint-free cloth and give the top of your screen, where the front camera lives, a good wipe. Make sure your hands are clean and dry, too. If you're using a screen protector, check that it's not cracked or covering the sensor area.

Check Your Face ID and Attention Settings

Head into Settings > Face ID & Passcode. You'll need to enter your passcode to get in. First, make sure the features you want, like iPhone Unlock, are toggled on.

Also, look for "Require Attention for Face ID." If this is on, you need to be looking directly at your phone for it to unlock. Turning it off can help if you're having issues, though it's slightly less secure. While you're here, see if "Attention Aware Features" is enabled, as this can also affect responsiveness.

Reset Face ID or Touch ID

If the sensor is clean and the settings look right, the next step is to reset your biometric data. Go back to Settings > Face ID & Passcode. Tap "Reset Face ID" or "Remove a Fingerprint."

After it's removed, set it up again. Make sure you're in good lighting and follow the on-screen prompts to move your head in a circle slowly. For a fingerprint, use different angles of your finger during enrollment. This fresh scan often solves recognition problems.

Update iOS

Software bugs can interfere with biometric sensors. Apple releases updates that frequently include fixes for these kinds of issues. Go to Settings > General > Software Update.

If an update is available, tap "Download and Install." It's best to do this while your iPhone 15 is connected to Wi-Fi and has a good charge, or better yet, is plugged into its USB-C charger. Keeping iOS current is one of the best ways to prevent glitches.

Check for an iPhone Case or Cover Interference

Some cases, especially bulky ones or those with thick front lips, can partially block the TrueDepth camera or the flood illuminator. Try taking your iPhone 15 out of its case and see if Face ID works more reliably.

Also, be mindful of how you hold the phone. Accidentally covering the top sensor array with your finger or palm while trying to unlock it will definitely cause a failure.

Set Up an Alternate Appearance

Face ID is smart, but major changes in your appearance can throw it off. If you've grown a beard, started wearing glasses all the time, or put on a hat, you can use the "Set Up an Alternate Appearance" feature.

You'll find this in the Face ID & Passcode settings. It lets you train Face ID to recognize a second look, which can greatly improve its accuracy in different situations.

Disable and Re-enable Face ID for Specific Features

Sometimes, the issue is isolated to one function, like unlocking your phone versus authenticating in an app. You can try toggling off individual features in the Face ID & Passcode menu.

Turn off "iPhone Unlock," restart your phone, and then turn it back on. This can reset the specific pathway the OS uses for that task and clear up a stubborn problem.

Review Your Environmental Conditions

Face ID uses infrared light to map your face. Extremely bright light, like direct sunlight, can sometimes overwhelm the sensor. Similarly, trying to use it in pitch darkness might not work as expected, though the infrared illuminator should help.

If you're having trouble outside, try shading the top of your phone with your hand for a second. Also, ensure you're holding the phone at a normal distance, not too close to your face or too far away.

Check for Pending Notifications or Alerts

This is a subtle one. Sometimes, if a notification is waiting on your lock screen that requires attention, the phone might not proceed straight to the home screen even after recognizing your face. Swipe away any notifications or alerts and try again.

Also, if you have "USB Accessories" locked in Screen Time settings, connecting to a new USB-C accessory could be locking the phone and requiring a passcode, which can be mistaken for a Face ID failure.
