You load a fresh HP 936 or 936e cartridge into your OfficeJet Pro 9120e, and the touchscreen immediately flashes Cartridge Problem or Ink Cartridge Missing. The printer sits there, refusing to print, and that new cartridge you just snapped in doesn't exist as far as the machine is concerned.

Most of the time, this is a simple communication breakdown between the cartridge chip and the printer's reader. A few things specific to the 9120e tend to cause it. Here's the fastest way to narrow it down.

Start With the Orange Tape

HP ships 936-series cartridges with a bright orange protective tape covering the nozzles and the chip contacts. If you missed pulling it off, the printer can't read the chip at all. Pull the cartridge back out and check the bottom and the side for any leftover plastic or tape. This is the single most common cause of the not-detected error on this model, and it takes two seconds to fix.

If the tape is completely off and the error sticks, move on to the next step.

Reseat the Cartridge Firmly

The OfficeJet Pro 9120e uses a drop-in system that needs a distinct click to seat correctly. Slide the cartridge in at a slight angle and push upward until you feel or hear it snap into place. A cartridge that looks fully installed but isn't making electrical contact with the carriage pins will trigger the same missing-cartridge error. Pop it out and push it in again with a little more force. You want that click.

If you're reinstalling both cartridges, it doesn't matter which order you go in on the 9120e, just make sure each one clicks.

Clean the Gold Contacts on Both Sides

If the tape is off and the cartridge is clicked in, dirty contacts are the next likely suspect. Pull the cartridge out and look at the small gold-colored copper chip on the side. Wipe it gently with a dry lint-free cloth or a coffee filter. Don't use water or alcohol on the cartridge chip unless the residue is really stubborn, and if you do, use distilled water on a cotton swab and let it dry completely.

Now grab a flashlight and look inside the empty carriage slot. You'll see a set of spring-loaded gold pins that press against the cartridge chip. If those look dirty or have ink residue on them, blow out any dust or wipe them carefully with a dry cloth. Let everything dry for about a minute before reinstalling the cartridge.

Unplug the Printer for 3 to 5 Minutes

The 9120e keeps a cache of the last cartridge state, and a quick power-off doesn't always flush it. Pull the power cord from the back of the printer, not just the wall outlet. Wait at least three minutes, five minutes is safer. Plug it back in and let the printer run its full startup cycle. This forces the ink system to reinitialize and re-read every chip from scratch, which clears a lot of stubborn detection errors.

Check for Instant Ink or HP+ Restrictions

This one is specific to the OfficeJet Pro 9120e and catches a lot of people. If you have an active Instant Ink subscription, the printer will refuse third-party or refilled cartridges. The printer only accepts the HP cartridge that's enrolled in the plan. If you activated HP+ during the initial setup, the printer is permanently locked to genuine HP cartridges for the rest of its life. There's no way to turn HP+ off. If you're trying to use a non-HP cartridge, that's the entire problem. Switch to a genuine HP 936 or 936e cartridge and the error disappears.

Update Firmware Through HP Smart

HP pushes firmware updates through the HP Smart app that improve how the printer reads new cartridge chips. Open HP Smart on your phone or computer, select your printer, and check for a firmware update under the printer settings or maintenance menu. If there's an update available, install it. The printer restarts and runs a full cartridge check on boot. This fixes compatibility issues with newer batches of 936e cartridges that the original 2023 firmware might not recognize.

Swap Cartridges to Narrow It Down

If you have another 936 or 936e cartridge handy, even a partially used one, swap it into the slot that's giving the error. If the second cartridge works, the first one has a bad chip and needs to be returned. If the second cartridge also fails, the problem is in the printer's carriage contacts or logic board, not the cartridge. At that point, a factory reset through the touchscreen menu (Setup > Tools > Restore > Restore Factory Defaults) is worth trying, but hardware contact issues usually win.

A bad chip on a brand new cartridge happens occasionally. Note the lot number on the box, contact the retailer or HP, and request a replacement. Chip failures are covered under the cartridge warranty, and a fresh cartridge typically clears the error immediately.
