Windows Update errors usually show up at the worst time: downloads stall, installs fail, or the same update keeps coming back. The current Windows Update troubleshooter lives in Get Help and Windows 11 Settings, so use those routes first and skip the older repair tools that Microsoft has moved away from.

1. Start With Get Help

Open Settings > Windows Update and click Check for updates, then install anything pending and restart if prompted.
Open Settings > Windows Update and click Check for updates, then install anything pending and restart if prompted.

Get Help is Microsoft’s current app-based route for Windows troubleshooters, and it is the first place to try when Windows Update will not download or install updates.

  1. 1.Open the Get Help app.
  2. 2.Select the Search bar.
  3. 3.Enter windows update troubleshooter.
  4. 4.Follow the steps shown in Get Help.
  5. 5.If Get Help asks to run diagnostics, select Yes.

This applies to Windows 11 and to Windows 10 devices that still have Get Help. Microsoft says Windows 10 consumer support ended on October 14, 2025.

2. Run It From Windows 11 Settings

  1. 1.Select Start.
  2. 2.Open Settings.
  3. 3.Select System.
  4. 4.Select Troubleshoot.
  5. 5.Open Other troubleshooters.
  6. 6.Under Most frequent, select Run next to Windows Update.
  7. 7.Follow the on-screen instructions.
  8. 8.Restart your device when the troubleshooter finishes.

This is the direct Windows 11 Settings path. After the restart, check Windows Update again so Windows can scan with the repaired update settings.

3. Open Settings Faster With the Keyboard

Use the keyboard shortcut when you want to reach the same Windows 11 troubleshooter screen more quickly.

  • Press Windows logo key + I.
  • Go to System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  • Find Windows Update.
  • Select Run.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions.

The keyboard shortcut opens Settings on Windows 10 too, but the current Windows 11 route continues through System, Troubleshoot, and Other troubleshooters.

4. Launch It From Microsoft Support

  1. 1.Open the Microsoft Support Windows Update Troubleshooter page.
  2. 2.Select Run the troubleshooter in Get Help.
  3. 3.When your browser asks to open the app, allow it to open Get Help.
  4. 4.Follow the diagnostics prompts in Get Help.

Microsoft’s Windows Update Troubleshooter support page can open the same Get Help diagnostics flow. Use this path when you are already on Microsoft Support and want the page to hand off directly to Get Help.

5. Reinstall Get Help If It Is Missing

No Get Help app? Get it from Microsoft Apps, then run the same Windows Update search inside the app.

  1. 1.Open Get Help - Microsoft Apps at apps.microsoft.com/detail/9pkdzbmv1h3t.
  2. 2.Select the Store option to install or open Get Help.
  3. 3.Open Get Help.
  4. 4.Select the Search bar.
  5. 5.Enter windows update troubleshooter.
  6. 6.Follow the steps shown in the app.

Store access, account settings, region, and device policy control availability.

6. Check for Updates Again

  • Restart your device.
  • Open Start.
  • Open Settings.
  • Select Windows Update.
  • Select Check for updates.

The troubleshooter is only half the job. Once it finishes, send Windows Update back out for a fresh scan. If updates appear, let Windows download and install them before you make another change.

7. Ask IT About Managed PCs

Work and school devices can restrict troubleshooting behavior. If Get Help or Windows Update troubleshooting is blocked, contact your IT administrator and say you need access to the Windows Update troubleshooter.

For admins, Microsoft documents recommended troubleshooting controls under Computer Configuration > System > Troubleshooting and Diagnostics > Microsoft Support Diagnostic Tool > Troubleshooting: Allow users to access recommended troubleshooting for known problems. Policy values include Off, Critical, Prompt, Notify, Silent, and Configurable.

8. Ignore Old MSDT and Easy Fix Advice

Older Windows Update repair tutorials mention MSDT commands, PowerShell TroubleshootingPack commands, standalone troubleshooting packs, and Microsoft Easy Fix downloads. Do not use those as current consumer fixes.

Microsoft documents MSDT as deprecated, says legacy inbox troubleshooters are being redirected to Get Help or removed, and points current Windows Update troubleshooting to Get Help and Settings.
