Getting your new Google Pixel 9a set up with all your old stuff is a smooth process. Google has refined the transfer tools over the years, making it straightforward whether you're upgrading from an older Android or making the switch from an iPhone. The key is to pick the right method for your situation.
Start the Transfer During Initial Setup
The absolute best time to move everything is when you first turn on your Pixel 9a. After you select your language and connect to Wi-Fi, you'll hit the "Copy apps & data" screen. This is your main hub for the transfer. Tap Next and you'll see your options.
You can choose to copy directly from your old Android phone, restore from a Google One cloud backup, or transfer from an iPhone. I'd recommend the direct copy if you have both phones in hand, as it's the most comprehensive method.
Copy Directly from Your Old Android Phone
On the "Copy apps & data" screen, select A backup from an Android phone. Your Pixel 9a will then prompt you to grab your old device. On that old phone, open the Google app and say "set up my device" or navigate to Settings > Google > Set up & restore > Set up nearby device.
Follow the on-screen prompts. The phones will connect via a private Wi-Fi network. You'll then see a list of what can be transferred: your apps, app data, call history, contacts, device settings, photos, videos, and SMS messages. Just select what you want and let it run.
Use a USB-C Cable for a Faster Transfer
If you want the absolute fastest and most reliable transfer, use a cable. You'll need a USB-C to USB-C cable and possibly the Quick Switch Adapter that came in your Pixel 9a's box. Connect the two phones during the setup process when prompted.
The wired connection is often quicker than Wi-Fi and doesn't rely on your network's stability. It's a great choice if you have a lot of photos and videos to move. The process is otherwise identical to the wireless method, guiding you through the same selection screens.
Restore from a Google One Backup
Don't have your old phone anymore? No problem, as long as you backed it up. During your Pixel 9a's setup, choose to restore from a cloud backup. After signing into your Google account, you'll see a list of available backups from your previous devices.
Pick the most recent one. Your apps will begin downloading from the Play Store, and your settings, call history, and text messages will be restored. To check if your old phone was backing up, you could have gone to Settings > System > Backup to see the last backup time.
Switching from an iPhone to Your Pixel 9a
Google makes this transition easier than you might think. On the "Copy apps & data" screen, tap iPhone as your source. You'll be instructed to download the "Switch to Android" app from the App Store on your iPhone.
Open that app, follow the steps to connect the phones via a QR code, and choose what you want to move. Your contacts, calendar events, photos, and videos will transfer over. Your messages will come across, too. Since iOS apps don't work on Android, you'll need to download fresh versions from the Google Play Store.
Let Your Google Account Handle the Sync
A huge amount of your digital life is already tied to your Google account and will sync automatically. Once you sign in on your new Pixel 9a, your contacts, calendar, Gmail, Chrome bookmarks and history, and many app preferences will just appear.
You can manage exactly what data is syncing by going to Settings > Passwords & accounts > [Your Google Account]. Toggle the sync on or off for individual services like Drive, Photos, or Keep Notes here.
Transfer WhatsApp Chats and Other App Data
For WhatsApp, the transfer is built-in. On your old Android phone, open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Chats > Chat transfer. Follow the prompts to generate a QR code, then scan it with your new Pixel 9a. Your chat history will move over.
For other apps, check their settings for backup or sync options. Many games save your progress to Google Play Games automatically. Social media apps like Instagram or X usually store everything on their servers, so just logging in will restore your profile.
Finishing Up on Your New Pixel 9a
Once the transfer is complete, take some time to walk through your new phone. Open your app drawer to see all your installed apps downloading. Check your Photos gallery and Contacts to make sure everything looks right. Log into any apps that require a fresh sign-in, like banking or social media apps.
After you're confident everything has moved over successfully, it's crucial to properly wipe your old phone. Go into its settings, find the factory reset option, and erase all data before you sell, trade, or recycle it. This protects your personal information.
