Spam calls are a universal nuisance, but your Google Pixel 9a has some of the best built-in tools to fight them. With Android 15 and Google's own Phone app, you can block numbers, screen calls, and filter out junk before it ever rings.

Block a Number from Your Recent Calls

Open the Phone app and tap the "Recents" tab at the bottom. Find the spam number in your list and tap on it to see its details. On the call details screen, you'll see an option for Block & report spam. Tap it, confirm your choice, and that number is done.

This action blocks all future calls and texts from that number. It also reports the number to Google to help improve spam detection for everyone else.

Block Someone from a Text Message

If the spam is coming via SMS, open the Messages app. Find the conversation from the unwanted number and tap on it to open it. Tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner and select Details.

On the details page, tap Block & report spam. You'll get a confirmation explaining that the contact will be blocked and the conversation reported. This is often the quickest way to deal with persistent text spammers.

Block a Contact Directly

For someone already in your contacts, open the Contacts app. Find and tap on the person's name to open their contact card. Tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner and select Block numbers.

You'll see a list of all the numbers saved for that contact. You can choose to block all of them or select specific ones. This is useful if you only want to block a person's work number, for example.

Manage Your Blocked List

To see who you've blocked or to unblock someone, go to your Phone app's settings. Tap the three-dot menu in the search bar, then go to Settings > Blocked numbers.

You'll see a complete list. To unblock a number, just tap the X next to it. You can also manually add numbers to this list by tapping Add a number at the bottom, which is handy for blocking a number someone gives you verbally.

Turn On Google's Spam Protection

Your Pixel 9a's default Phone app has powerful automatic filtering. To make sure it's on, go to Phone app > Settings > Caller ID & spam.

Here, toggle on both See caller and spam ID and Filter spam calls. With these enabled, your phone will warn you about suspected spam as it rings and can automatically send high-risk spam calls straight to voicemail without your phone ever making a sound.

Use Call Screen on Your Pixel

This is a standout Pixel feature. When a call comes in from an unknown number, you'll see a Screen call button alongside the answer and decline options. Tap it, and Google Assistant answers the call for you.

You get a live transcript of what the caller is saying. You can tap a button to pick up if it's important, or instantly mark it as spam and hang up. I've found this completely stops robocalls in their tracks, as the bots usually hang up on the assistant.

Silence Calls from Unknown Numbers

For the most aggressive approach, you can silence any caller not in your contacts. In the Phone app, go to Settings > Blocked numbers and toggle on Unknown.

This won't block them entirely. Calls will go silently to voicemail, which is good for doctors' offices or delivery drivers who might call from a main line. You'll still see the missed call notification and can check the voicemail if needed.

What Actually Happens When You Block

When you block a number on your Pixel, the caller is typically redirected to voicemail after one ring, or they might hear a message that the line isn't available. They won't receive any specific notification that they've been blocked.

Any text messages they send will be silently deleted. They won't show up in your Messages app at all, and you won't get a notification. The block is comprehensive and happens on your device, so it works regardless of your carrier.

Block Spam Email in Gmail

Since your Pixel is tied to your Google account, dealing with email spam is easy. Open the Gmail app, find an email from the spam sender, and open it. Tap the three-dot menu at the top and select Block "[sender]".

All future emails from that address will go directly to your Spam folder. For more malicious emails that look like phishing attempts, use the Report spam option instead, which helps train Google's filters.

Consider a Dedicated Call Blocker App

If you need an even larger community-based spam list, apps like Truecaller can be installed from the Play Store. These apps use crowdsourced data to identify and block spam calls from millions of numbers globally.

After installing, the app will ask for permission to manage your calls. Once granted, it can identify incoming calls with a name even if they're not in your contacts, and automatically block numbers with a bad reputation. It adds another layer on top of Google's own excellent systems.
