Your phone is on the same Wi-Fi, but the laptop drops the network, rejects the password, or says connected while pages never load. That points to a laptop-side Wi-Fi control, saved profile, driver, band, power setting, router access rule, or management policy. Start with the quick laptop checks, then move into resets and admin-only cases in the order that saves the most time.

Start with the laptop's own Wi-Fi controls

On Windows 11, select the Network, Sound, or Battery icon on the right side of the taskbar to open quick settings, then turn Wi-Fi on. On the Wi-Fi quick setting, select Manage Wi-Fi connections, choose your network, select Connect, type the network password, and select Next. Open Start > Settings > Network & internet > Airplane mode and set Airplane mode to Off.

Some laptops also have a physical Wi-Fi switch or wireless function key. Turn that switch or key to On before changing deeper settings.

On a Mac, open the Wi-Fi status menu in the menu bar, choose the network, enter the password, and select Join. If Wi-Fi is off, open Apple menu > System Settings > Wi-Fi and switch Wi-Fi to On.

On a Chromebook, select the time at the bottom right, then open Settings > Network > Wi-Fi. Choose the network and select Connect.

Forget the network and reconnect cleanly

This fixes a bad saved password, stale network profile, or laptop-only connection glitch.

On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks.

Select your Wi-Fi network name.

Choose Forget.

Open the Wi-Fi list.

Choose the same network again.

Select Connect.

Enter the Wi-Fi password.

On a Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > Wi-Fi > Details for the network you are on.

Select Forget This Network.

When the network is saved but the Mac is not connected to it, find it under Known Networks, which some macOS versions place behind Advanced, select the More button next to the network name, and choose Remove From List.

Join the network again.

On a Chromebook, sign in.

Select the time at the bottom right.

Open Settings > Network > Wi-Fi > Known networks.

Select More next to the network.

Choose Forget.

Choose the network again.

Select Connect.

Restart the laptop and refresh the home network

On Windows, select Start > Power > Restart.

On a Mac, select Apple menu > Restart.

On a Chromebook, use the Power menu or hardware Power button to shut down.

Turn the Chromebook back on.

Unplug the router power.

Unplug the modem power.

Remove the modem backup battery when the lights stay on.

Wait at least 30 seconds.

Reconnect the modem.

Wait for the modem lights to stabilize.

Reconnect the router.

Wait a few minutes.

Try the laptop on Wi-Fi again.

If the phone loses Wi-Fi after the restart, switch to router or internet-service troubleshooting.

Try the other Wi-Fi band or network name

Your phone and laptop do not always land on the same router band. When the router shows separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network names, open the laptop's Wi-Fi list and connect to the other network name.

On Windows, Microsoft points to the adapter's Wireless Mode or Band setting when the laptop cannot use the router's frequency. Open Device Manager > Network adapters, open the wireless adapter's Properties, then check Advanced > Wireless Mode or Band.

For Mac households, set the router through its official app or web admin page with one network name for all bands where appropriate, WPA3 Personal security, or WPA2/WPA3 Transitional for compatibility with older devices, DHCP enabled, WMM enabled, updated firmware, and NAT enabled only on the router. Use the router vendor's own controls for those changes.

Run the built-in network repair tool

On Windows 11, Microsoft's current route is the automated Network and Internet troubleshooter in the Get Help app, which runs the diagnostics and fixes most problems for you. The Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Network Adapter entry still works, but Windows now redirects it to Get Help rather than running the old standalone troubleshooter.

On a Mac, click Wi-Fi in Control Center or the menu bar and choose Wi-Fi Recommendations when it appears. For a deeper check, hold Option, click Wi-Fi, choose Open Wireless Diagnostics, and follow the onscreen instructions.

On a Chromebook, open Settings > About ChromeOS > Diagnostics. The Connectivity tests run automatically for the default connection; use Run again or Show details to review the result.

If this method fails, move to updates, drivers, and adapter settings next.

Update software or reinstall the Wi-Fi driver

On Windows, open Start > Settings > Windows Update.

Select Check for updates.

On a Mac, connect through another Wi-Fi network or Ethernet.

Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update.

Install the available macOS update.

On a Chromebook, connect through Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

Open Settings > About ChromeOS.

Select Check for updates.

When the Windows laptop still has no connection, use another device to open the PC maker's official support or driver page.

Enter the laptop's Service Tag, Product ID, model, or serial number.

Open the maker's Drivers & Downloads, Drivers and Software Download, Drivers & Software, or Driver & Tools section.

Download the latest network or Wi-Fi adapter driver for the exact laptop model and Windows version.

Copy the driver to the laptop with USB when the laptop has no internet connection.

Install the driver.

When Windows still fails after the driver install, open Device Manager > Network adapters.

Right-click the Wi-Fi adapter and choose Uninstall device.

Check Attempt to remove the driver for this device.

Select Uninstall.

Restart from Start > Power > Restart.

Have the replacement driver ready before uninstalling when the laptop has no other way to get online.

Clear power, proxy, VPN, and adapter blocks

The most common cause to rule out here is a laptop that shows connected while power saving, proxy, VPN, or adapter state blocks real internet access.

On Windows, open Device Manager > Network adapters, right-click the Wi-Fi adapter, and choose Enable device when the adapter is disabled. Open the adapter's Properties > Power Management and clear Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power when that tab is present.

For Windows power plans, open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings > Wireless Adapter Settings > Power Saving Mode, then choose Maximum Performance. If Wi-Fi connects but websites do not load, open Settings > Network & Internet > Proxy and turn off manual proxy settings that should not be in use.

On a Mac, remove a blocking VPN from Apple menu > System Settings > VPN > Info > Remove Configuration. Check System Settings > General > Date & Time and correct the date, time, and time zone.

Reset the laptop connection stack

This fixes damaged Windows network state, renews a Mac DHCP address, and clears Chromebook hardware state after simpler repairs fail.

On Windows, open Search.

Type command prompt.

Select Run as administrator.

Select Yes.

Run netsh winsock reset.

Run netsh int ip reset.

Run ipconfig /release.

Run ipconfig /renew.

Run ipconfig /flushdns.

Restart the laptop from Start > Power > Restart.

When the command reset fails, open Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset.

Select Reset now.

Select Yes.

Let Windows restart.

On a Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > Network.

Select the Wi-Fi network service.

Open Details > TCP/IP.

Select Renew DHCP Lease.

Select OK.

On a Chromebook, the last resort is a hardware reset, and Google warns that it restarts Chromebook hardware such as the keyboard and touchpad and might delete some files in the Downloads folder, so back up important local files first.

Turn the Chromebook off.

Press and hold Refresh and tap Power.

Release Refresh when the Chromebook starts.

Check router access and work profiles

A router blocks the laptop while allowing the phone when Access control, MAC filtering, firmware trouble, or a DHCP address shortage affects only that device. Open the router's official app or web admin page, update firmware, confirm DHCP has available addresses, and allow the laptop's MAC address when access control is on.

On macOS Sequoia 15 or later, a router that blocks unknown MAC addresses rejects the Mac until the private address setting matches the router's rule. Open Apple menu > System Settings > Wi-Fi > Details or More Info next to the network, then set Private Wi-Fi Address to Off, Fixed, or Rotating according to the router's access rule.

For a school or work laptop, stop when Wi-Fi settings are locked, the network cannot be forgotten, or device management profiles control the connection. Contact the organization that manages the laptop, because the fix belongs in the managed Wi-Fi profile.

If this method fails at home, test the laptop on another Wi-Fi network; when every network fails, use the laptop maker's official support page for the exact model.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a 169.254 address mean on the laptop?

A 169.254.x.x address points to the laptop not receiving a usable DHCP address. In the router app or web admin page, check the DHCP address pool and Access control or MAC filtering.

Should I use WPS to fix laptop Wi-Fi?

Skip WPS as the main fix. WPS setup is legacy in this context, and many modern routers disable or omit it for security.

How do I handle hotel or airport Wi-Fi on a Chromebook?

After connecting, open Chrome and visit a site that starts with http:// to trigger the sign-in page. When administrator settings allow it, use Ctrl + Shift + n for a private window; if the portal still fails, turn off Chrome extensions.

Why can't I forget a Wi-Fi network on a managed laptop?

Managed networks do not always allow forgetting or disabling Auto-Join. Work and school Windows, Mac, and ChromeOS devices receive Wi-Fi profiles from admin tools, so contact the administrator when those settings are locked.
