The YouTube app on Apple TV stops working when the app gets stuck, the software is old, the network drops, sign-in breaks, or the Apple TV model is no longer supported.

Start with the fastest app resets, then check the model, updates, reinstall options, account fixes, network settings, AirPlay, and the final reset checks.

Start with the fastest app fixes

Close YouTube first. Press the TV button twice quickly, move to YouTube in the app switcher, swipe up on the clickpad or touch surface, then open YouTube again from the Home Screen.

Press the Home button on your remote, reopen the YouTube app, and try the video again.

For sign-in glitches, open YouTube, go to the left menu, choose your profile picture, select your account, and choose Sign out. Then open YouTube again and sign in with your phone, the QR code, yt.be/activate, or your remote.

Check your Apple TV model

Make sure your Apple TV is a model that supports the current YouTube app.

  1. 1.Open Settings on Apple TV.
  2. 2.Go to General.
  3. 3.Choose About.
  4. 4.Look at Model.
  5. 5.If you have Apple TV 4th generation or higher, continue with the fixes below.
  6. 6.If you have Apple TV 3rd generation or earlier, use AirPlay or replace the Apple TV, because the current YouTube app path is not supported.

Restart Apple TV properly

This fixes frozen screens, app hangs, playback errors, and network errors.

Open Settings.

Choose System.

Select Restart.

If Apple TV does not respond, press and hold the TV button and the Back or Menu button until the Apple TV status light blinks rapidly.

Disconnect Apple TV from power, wait five seconds, and reconnect it.

For YouTube playback errors, leave Apple TV unplugged for at least 30 seconds before plugging it back in.

Update YouTube and tvOS

An outdated YouTube app causes crashes, blank screens, and playback problems. Open the App Store, search for YouTube, select the app, and choose Update. If Update is not shown, YouTube is already up to date.

Turn on app updates from Settings, then Apps, then Automatically Update Apps.

Update Apple TV from Settings, then System, then Software Updates, then Update Software, then Download and Install when an update is available. Turn on Automatically Update from the same Software Updates screen.

Reinstall YouTube for a clean copy

From the Apple TV Home Screen, highlight YouTube.

Press and hold the clickpad or touch surface.

Choose Delete App.

Confirm with Delete.

Open the App Store, search for YouTube, and choose Get, Install, or Download.

To remove it through storage settings, open Settings, then General, then Manage Storage, then choose the trash button next to YouTube, then choose Delete.

Deleting removes app data, so use Reset app inside YouTube or delete and reinstall the app instead of looking for a YouTube cache-clear button in Apple TV settings.

Fix YouTube sign-in and account problems

Open the YouTube app and go to Settings, then choose Reset app. This signs you out when you are signed in.

When YouTube opens to Who’s Watching?, choose another account, Guest, or Add account.

If you are already signed in, use the left-hand navigation, select your profile picture, open the Accounts tab, and choose another account, Add account, or Guest.

If a locked YouTube profile is blocking access, select Forgot code? on the lock screen.

Sign in with your Google Account credentials to turn off account lock for that device.

If this method fails, remotely sign out the Apple TV from your Google Account device activity page, or remove YouTube on TV access from your Google Account permissions page, then sign in again on Apple TV.

Repair the Apple TV network connection

This fixes buffering, videos that will not load, and errors that appear when other apps are also struggling.

Test the connection speed near the Apple TV. YouTube recommends at least 7 Mbps for HD streaming.

In the YouTube video player, open Settings, choose Quality, and select a lower or manual quality option.

Reconnect Wi-Fi from Settings, then Network, then Wi-Fi, and choose your network.

To clear a stale Wi-Fi connection, go to Settings, then Network, then Wi-Fi, select the current network, choose Forget Network, then join it again and enter the password.

Restart your router and modem by unplugging them from power, plugging them back in, and trying YouTube again.

If your Apple TV has an Ethernet port, connect it directly to your router, cable modem, or DSL modem with an Ethernet cable.

Apple TV automatically uses Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi when connected.

Use AirPlay while the app is broken

Connect your iPhone, iPad, or Mac to the same Wi-Fi network as Apple TV.

On iPhone or iPad, start the YouTube video and tap AirPlay in the video window.

Select your Apple TV.

For screen mirroring, open Control Center, tap Screen Mirroring, and choose Apple TV.

On Mac, open Control Center, choose Screen Mirroring, and select Apple TV.

Use the AirPlay button in video playback controls when it appears.

If AirPlay cannot see Apple TV, go to Settings, then AirPlay and Apple Home, then Allow Access, and choose Everyone or Anyone on the Same Network.

AirPlay keeps videos playing while you finish the deeper fixes for the native YouTube app.

Last checks before you reset Apple TV

If YouTube opens to a black screen or the picture drops out, check the HDMI connection before resetting anything. Unplug both ends of the HDMI cable, plug them back in firmly, try another HDMI cable, choose the correct HDMI input on the TV, and test another HDMI port.

For display switching problems, open Settings, then Video and Audio, then Match Content, and adjust Match Dynamic Range, Match Frame Rate, or Quick Media Switching. Use Settings, then Video and Audio, then Reset Video Settings when the display settings are incompatible with your TV.

Check Apple TV restrictions if YouTube is missing, blocked, or cannot be installed. Press and hold the TV button and select Restrictions, or go to Settings, then General, then Restrictions, enter the passcode, and set Restrictions to Off.

If the Apple TV belongs to a school, business, hotel, or conference room, ask the organization to allow YouTube or install it as a managed app. For your own Apple TV, use Settings, then System, then Reset, then Reset only after app, network, and software update fixes fail; Reset and Update erases the device and updates it at the same time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is YouTube not available on my Apple TV?

The current YouTube app supports Apple TV 4th generation or higher. Apple TV 3rd generation and earlier do not have the current supported YouTube app path, so use AirPlay or upgrade the Apple TV.

Does deleting YouTube on Apple TV remove my account?

Deleting the app removes app data from Apple TV. Your Google Account itself is not deleted, but you need to sign in again after reinstalling YouTube when the app reset removes the local sign-in state.

How fast does my internet need to be for YouTube on Apple TV?

YouTube recommends at least 7 Mbps for HD streaming. If playback buffers, lower the video quality in YouTube or use Ethernet if your Apple TV model has a port.

What should I do if the Apple TV remote is the problem?

Use the Apple TV Remote in iPhone or iPad Control Center, or reset the Siri Remote by holding Volume Down and TV for at least five seconds. To pair it again, hold Volume Up and Back or Menu near the Apple TV for two seconds.
