A completely black screen on your Google Pixel 9 can feel like a disaster, but it's often a temporary glitch you can fix yourself. The phone might be frozen, the battery could be critically low, or a recent software update might be acting up. Let's get your display back on.

Force Restart Your Pixel 9

This is almost always the first step I'd take. Simply press and hold the Power button for a full 30 seconds. Keep holding it even if the screen stays dark. You should feel the phone vibrate and see the Google logo appear as it reboots. This works even if the touchscreen is completely unresponsive.

Charge Your Phone Properly

A fully drained battery will show nothing. Plug your Pixel 9 into a wall outlet using a known-good USB-C cable and a powerful enough adapter. For the fastest charge, use Google's 30W USB-C charger. Let it sit for at least 30 minutes before trying to turn it on again. If you see no charging indicator after that time, try a different cable and power source.

Remember that Adaptive Charging, a feature designed to preserve battery health, can sometimes be confusing. It learns your routine and may intentionally hold the charge at around 80% overnight if you have an alarm set. You can check if this is active in Settings > Battery > Adaptive charging.

Check for a Software Glitch

Pixel phones occasionally get quirky after a Feature Drop update. If the black screen started after a recent update, the force restart we just covered is your best bet. Also, check if Extreme Battery Saver is enabled, as it can sometimes interfere with how the screen or charging indicator behaves.

If you were using Battery Share to charge another device, the interface can sometimes get stuck. Try toggling it off by swiping down twice from the top of the screen to open the full Quick Settings panel (you can do this by feel) and tap the Battery Share tile, if you can locate it.

Inspect for Physical Damage

Take a close look at your Pixel 9's screen under good light. Look for any new cracks, deep scratches, or discolored spots. If the phone still vibrates for notifications, rings, or responds to "Hey Google," then the device is on but the display hardware is likely damaged. This will require a screen replacement.

Adjust the Brightness in the Dark

It sounds simple, but if your brightness is turned all the way down in a dark room, the screen can appear completely black. Try asking Google Assistant to "turn up the brightness." You can also try swiping down from the top of the screen to pull down the notification shade and feel for the brightness slider.

Restore Using a Computer

If the phone is still unresponsive, connect it to a Windows PC or Mac using a USB-C cable. On your computer, you'll need to use the web-based Android Flash Tool or have the Android SDK Platform-Tools installed. If your computer detects the device, you can attempt to re-flash the current Android version, which often fixes software corruption without erasing your data.

Boot into Recovery Mode

When a normal connection doesn't work, Recovery Mode is the next step. First, connect your Pixel 9 to the computer with a cable. Then, press and hold the Power and Volume Down buttons together until the bootloader screen appears (a screen with "Start" and other text). Use the volume buttons to navigate to "Recovery mode" and press the power button to select it. From here, you can try clearing the cache partition.

Consider Water Exposure

While the Pixel 9 has some water resistance, it's not invincible. If the phone was recently exposed to significant moisture, liquid could have reached the internal display connector. Power the phone off if you can and let it dry thoroughly in a warm, dry place for at least 48 hours. Avoid using rice or direct heat like a hairdryer.
