You grab your Pixel 10 Pro XL and tap the screen to unlock it, but the fingerprint icon just sits there. Or worse, it keeps telling you "Fingerprint not recognized" over and over. This is one of the most common headaches with under-display sensors, and it usually traces back to a few specific things on this phone.

Start with a Forced Restart

Before you go digging through settings, try this. Press and hold the Volume up and Power buttons simultaneously for 10 seconds, then release when the device restarts. This isn't the same as a normal power off. It forces a full hardware re-initialization and clears out temporary glitches that can hang the sensor driver.

In my experience, this single step fixes a surprising number of sudden sensor failures. If the scanner comes back after the restart, you're good to go.

Is the Screen Clean and Dry?

The Pixel 10 Pro XL uses an optical sensor under the display. That means anything on the screen above the sensor will block the read. Give the screen a good wipe with a dry microfiber cloth, especially right around the unlock icon area.

Make sure your thumb or finger is clean and totally dry too. A little bit of lotion, sweat, or moisture can make the sensor reject your print instantly. This is usually the lowest hanging fruit.

Let It Cool Down

The Pixel 10 Pro XL is known to run hot, particularly when it's charging. There's a known issue where the phone overheats and can temporarily disable the fingerprint sensor to protect internal components. If your phone feels warm to the touch, take it off the charger right away.

Remove the case and let it sit for five to ten minutes. Once the temperature drops back to normal, the scanner will typically start recognizing your prints again without any other changes. This is a direct result of thermal throttling, and it's very common on this model.

That Screen Protector Might Be the Problem

This is the biggest trap for Pixel owners. Thick tempered glass screen protectors can completely block the signal from the under-display fingerprint sensor. If you recently put a new protector on or it suddenly stopped working after a drop, peel it off and test the sensor.

If it works perfectly without the glass, you have your answer. You need a protector specifically designed to work with the Pixel 10 Pro XL's optical sensor. Not all "universal" protectors play nice with this hardware.

Delete and Re-Register Your Prints

If the sensor seems to work but just doesn't recognize your specific finger anymore, the stored fingerprint data might be corrupted or outdated. Go to Settings > Security & privacy > Device unlock > Fingerprint & face unlock. Enter your PIN, then delete all existing fingerprints.

When you add a new one, take your time. Rotate your finger slowly so the sensor maps the edges and the center. I always recommend adding the same finger twice for better coverage. It sounds redundant, but it drastically improves the recognition rate.

Check Your Charger and Cable

There's a known issue with the Pixel 10 Pro XL where the charging port can be finicky, and charging slows down significantly with certain chargers. A bad or unstable power state can cause system instability that affects the sensor. Plug your phone into a high-quality 30W+ USB-C PPS charger for the fastest wired power.

If you're using wireless charging, make sure the phone is perfectly centered on the Qi2 pad. The alignment is picky on this phone, and if it's off, the phone heats up and slows down charging. That heat triggers the thermal lockout on the fingerprint sensor.

Try Safe Mode

If the fingerprint sensor works fine for a while and then randomly stops, a third-party app might be the culprit. Boot your Pixel into Safe Mode by pressing and holding the Power button, then long-pressing the Power off icon and tapping OK.

Test the scanner in Safe Mode. If it works perfectly there, you've got a rogue app interfering with the system. Start uninstalling the last apps you downloaded or updated until the problem goes away.
