There are two main ways to reset a Fitbit Charge 6, and the method you pick depends on the situation. If the screen is frozen or the watch isn't responding, a force restart clears the glitch without losing any data. If you're selling the Charge 6 or handing it to someone else, you need the factory reset, which wipes everything back to out-of-box condition.

The Charge 6 runs Fitbit OS and pairs with the Fitbit app on Android 9+ or iOS 15+. Important note for new setups: you must use a Google Account. Fitbit-only accounts are no longer accepted. If you're resetting a Charge 6 that was previously set up with a legacy Fitbit account, that watch will need to be factory reset and linked to a Google Account on next setup.

Force Restart When the Display Is Frozen

If your Charge 6 is stuck on a screen, won't swipe, or feels completely unresponsive, a force restart is the first move. This is a hard reboot, it doesn't erase your data, preferences, or paired phone info.

Plug the Charge 6 into the proprietary charging cradle. Once it's connected, squeeze and hold the side button for 10 12 seconds. Keep holding until you see the Fitbit logo on screen, then release. The watch restarts in about 30 seconds and goes back to your watch face. This fix works even if the display is completely black (as long as the haptic button buzzes when squeezed).

One quirk of the Charge 6: the side button isn't mechanical. It's a haptic/inductive sensor, it buzzes when you squeeze it but doesn't physically move. So don't worry if it feels different than a normal button; just squeeze firmly at the indentation on the left edge of the case.

Factory Reset From the Settings Menu

If you need to wipe the Charge 6 clean before selling or gifting it, use the factory reset option in the settings menu. This erases all personal data, paired phones, connected apps (including Google Maps and YouTube Music), and returns the watch to its initial state.

Swipe down from the clock face to open the quick settings panel, then tap the gear icon to enter Settings. Scroll down to About, then tap Clear User Data. Confirm the reset, the watch will vibrate and show a progress circle. The process takes about 2 minutes, after which the Charge 6 reboots to the pairing screen with the Fitbit logo.

Be aware: this does not automatically remove the Charge 6 from your Fitbit account's device list. To do that, open the Fitbit app, tap your profile icon, select your Charge 6, and choose Remove Device before handing it off. Otherwise the new owner might see an error during setup.

Reset by Unpairing From the Fitbit App

If your Charge 6 is still connected to your phone and you're switching to a new Fitbit (or just want a fresh start while keeping your health data), unpairing from the Fitbit app is the cleanest approach. Unlike the factory reset, unpairing creates a backup of your daily stats and settings before the watch is wiped.

Open the Fitbit app on your phone. Tap your profile photo or icon (top left), then tap your Charge 6 tile. Scroll to the bottom and tap Remove Device. Confirm the removal, the app syncs the watch one last time, saves that data to your account, then triggers a factory reset on the Charge 6 itself. The whole process takes about 3 5 minutes.

This method is ideal if you're upgrading to a Charge 7 or another Fitbit model. When you set up the new watch, your historical sleep data, step counts, and heart-rate trends will still be in the app. The removed Charge 6 goes back to the pairing screen and is ready for a new owner.

Setup After a Reset, What to Know

Once the Charge 6 is wiped, you'll see the Fitbit logo followed by a pairing prompt on the display. Open the Fitbit app on your phone and tap Set Up a New Device. The app will search for the Charge 6, make sure Bluetooth is on and your phone is within 10 feet.

When prompted, you'll need to log in with a Google Account. If you try to sign in with a legacy Fitbit-only account (one that hasn't been migrated), setup will fail. Tap Sign in with Google and use the same email associated with your Fitbit data, or create a new Google Account if you're starting fresh. The Charge 6 doesn't have built-in GPS, so location tracking will use your phone's GPS during exercises. Also, Google Maps and YouTube Music on the watch require you to sign into those Google services separately during setup.

One common post-reset issue is a sync failure. If your Charge 6 pairs but doesn't sync after setup, try this: in the Fitbit app, tap your profile > your Charge 6 > Synchronization Problem, then follow the in-app steps. If that doesn't help, remove the watch from Bluetooth settings on your phone (not from the app) and re-pair from scratch.

When the Haptic Button Isn't Working After a Reset

Rarely, after a factory reset, the side button might not respond to a squeeze. This is usually a software hiccup, not a hardware failure. The Charge 6's button is a solid-state haptic sensor, so there's no physical switch to break.

Try connecting the watch to its charger and force restarting it (hold the side button for 10 12 seconds until the Fitbit logo appears). After the restart, the button should wake up. If it still won't register, leave the watch on the charger for 30 minutes, a low battery can prevent the haptic sensor from powering properly after a reset.
