You tap the screen on your Fitbit Charge 6, but nothing happens. The side button wakes the screen up, or maybe it's stuck on a single stat screen. It's a frustration that usually has a straightforward fix, not a hardware failure.

Clean the Screen and Edges

The most common reason the Charge 6 touch screen goes dead is a layer of grime. Sweat, sunscreen, and daily hand oils build up on the glass and disrupt the capacitive touch sensor.

Wipe the screen with a clean microfiber cloth. Dampen the cloth slightly with water if the residue is stubborn, but squeeze out excess moisture first.

Pay attention to the edges of the screen too. Dirt can accumulate in the groove between the display and the metal bezel, which sometimes tricks the sensor into ignoring taps.

Force Restart the Charge 6

If cleaning doesn't wake the screen up, a force restart is the next best bet. This is a hard reboot for Fitbit OS that clears out any temporary glitches without deleting your data.

Connect your Charge 6 to its charging cradle. Then press and hold the side button for 10 to 12 seconds. Keep holding even if the screen flickers or shows a charging icon.

Release the button when you see the Fitbit logo and feel a vibration. The watch will restart, and the touch screen should respond normally afterward.

Charge It Back to Life

A deeply discharged battery can make the Charge 6 touch screen completely unresponsive. The watch might show the screen off and not react to taps or button presses.

Plug it into the proprietary charging cradle with a standard 5W USB adapter. Give it 15 to 20 minutes before trying to wake it up.

Unlike fast-charging devices, the Charge 6 takes a full 90 to 120 minutes to charge. Give it time to gather enough power to boot the touch driver.

Disable Water Lock If It's Active

Water Lock is a mode that specifically disables the touch screen to prevent accidental taps from water droplets. It's easy to turn on during a swim or a sweaty workout and forget about it.

Look for a water droplet icon at the top of the screen. If you see it, the touch screen is disabled by design.

To disable Water Lock, squeeze and hold the side button for two to three seconds. You'll feel a confirmation buzz, the icon will disappear, and your touch controls will come back.

Is the Side Button Confusing You?

The Charge 6's side button is an inductive haptic zone, not a physical moving button. You squeeze the stainless steel area and feel a buzz instead of a click.

Try squeezing the side button to see if the device responds. If you feel a buzz and the screen wakes up, the issue is isolated to the touch digitizer, not the whole watch.

If you don't feel a buzz, the watch may be completely frozen or have a power issue. Go back to the force restart step and try again.

Remove Any Screen Protector

Thick tempered glass screen protectors designed for the Charge 5 may not fit the curved edges of the Charge 6 perfectly. A small air gap between the protector and the glass can kill touch sensitivity.

Peel off any screen protector and test the touch directly on the display. If taps work without the protector, you need a Charge 6-specific protector or none at all.

Update the Firmware via the Fitbit App

Fitbit OS updates sometimes include patches for touch driver hangs. Updating doesn't require the watch's touch screen, so you can do this even if the display is unresponsive.

Open the Fitbit app on your phone. Tap the device icon at the top left, then select your Charge 6. If an update is available, tap Update and keep the watch on the charger until it finishes.

After the update completes, the watch reboots and the touch screen usually starts responding again.

Factory Reset the Device

If nothing else works, a factory reset wipes the watch and forces a clean setup. This removes any corrupted files in Fitbit OS that are causing the touch driver to fail.

In the Fitbit app, tap the device icon at the top left. Select your Charge 6, scroll to the bottom, and tap Factory Reset. This erases all data from the watch.

After the reset completes, set up the Charge 6 as a new device. New users will need a Google Account to finish setup, standalone Fitbit accounts are no longer accepted. Sync it fresh and test the touch screen. If it still doesn't work after a reset, the digitizer may need a hardware replacement.
