Resetting an Echo Dot Max is slightly different from the older Echo Dot 5, mainly because the Dot Max packs Wi-Fi 6E, a built-in smart home hub with Zigbee/Matter/Thread, and the new AZ3 chip. That means a reset wipes more than just your Wi-Fi credentials, so it's worth understanding what goes before you press the button.
The fastest way to factory reset: press and hold the Action button (the dot icon on the top) for 25 seconds. The light ring turns orange, then off, then back on solid orange. That's it. The whole process from button press to ready-for-setup takes about 90 seconds.
What a Factory Reset Actually Clears
Resetting the Echo Dot Max wipes everything stored locally. That includes paired Bluetooth speakers, locally cached preferences, and any Zigbee, Matter, or Thread devices that were paired directly through the Dot Max's onboard hub. If you had a separate hub like a Hue Bridge, those devices stay paired to that hub.
What survives the reset: your Amazon account, Alexa+ subscription (free with Prime, $19.99/month standalone in the US), account-level Routines, Skills, and shopping history. Those live in Amazon's cloud and reattach automatically when you re-pair the device after reset.
If you're resetting because a smart home device stopped working, check whether it was paired to the Dot Max's hub or a separate one. That saves a re-pair headache later.
Press and Hold: The Standard Reset
Make sure the Dot Max is powered on and the light ring is visible. If the ring is red or off, the device might be muted or unplugged.
Press and hold the Action button (the one with the dot icon). Hold for a full 25 seconds. Release early and nothing happens. At around 8 seconds the light ring turns orange, keep holding. Around 25 seconds the ring goes dark briefly, then comes back solid orange. You can let go now.
The solid orange ring means the device is broadcasting its setup network and waiting for the Alexa app to find it.
Re-pair in the Alexa App After Reset
Open the Alexa app on your phone. Tap Devices at the bottom right, then tap the + icon at the top right. Tap Add Device > Amazon Echo > Echo Dot Max. The app automatically finds your Dot Max because it's broadcasting its setup network.
The app asks you to pick a Wi-Fi network. The Dot Max supports 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz bands. During initial pairing, the 5 GHz band is usually the most stable. If you have a Wi-Fi 6E router, the Dot Max will roam onto 6 GHz later, but stick with 5 GHz for setup to avoid dropouts.
Enter your Wi-Fi password. The Dot Max connects, downloads any pending firmware updates from Amazon, and configures itself. This takes a minute or two.
If the 25-Second Hold Doesn't Work
Sometimes the Dot Max ignores the button press if it's hung in a software state or mid-update. Try this: unplug the power cable from the back of the Dot Max, wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in. As soon as the light ring starts spinning blue during boot, immediately press and hold the Action button. Hold until the ring turns orange (this might take up to 30 seconds).
If the device is completely unresponsive to any button press, power cycle first: unplug for a full 60 seconds, plug back in, and attempt the standard reset right after the boot animation finishes.
Reset Through the Alexa App
You can also factory reset from software if the Dot Max is online and responsive. In the Alexa app, go to Devices > Echo Dot Max > Settings (gear icon) and scroll down to Factory Reset. Tap and confirm. The device wipes and reboots into setup mode. This won't work if the Dot Max is showing offline in the app.
Deregistering vs Factory Reset
If you're selling, gifting, or returning the Dot Max, you need to do more than just reset it. In the Alexa app, go to Devices > Echo Dot Max > Settings and tap Deregister. This removes the device from your Amazon account. However, that alone leaves your Wi-Fi credentials cached on the device. The next person who gets it can factory reset and still have access to your network.
Best practice: deregister first, then perform a factory reset using the button method. That clears both the account link and the local network data.
If three consecutive reset attempts fail to produce a solid orange ring, the device likely has a hardware fault. Amazon support can confirm, but in my experience, a Dot Max that won't enter setup mode after a power-cycle and button hold is usually a bad unit.
