You tap a routine in the Alexa app, or you say "Alexa, turn on the lights," and nothing happens. The Echo Dot Max is online, you can see the light ring glowing, but the app won't send commands and voice replies with "I'm having trouble controlling that device." It feels like the app and the speaker are speaking different languages.

Start with the simplest thing. Force-quit the Alexa app and reopen it. On iPhone, swipe up from the bottom and flick the Alexa app card off the screen. On Android, tap the recent-apps button and swipe the Alexa app away. Reopen it and let the app fully reload. Many app-side glitches clear at this step alone.

Is the Echo Dot Max Actually Connected to Wi-Fi?

The Echo Dot Max supports Wi-Fi 6E on both 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz bands, but it falls back to 5 GHz if your router isn't 6E-capable. If you recently swapped routers or changed your Wi-Fi password, the Dot Max may be stuck trying to reconnect. Check by asking "Alexa, check my network", the speaker will tell you the connection status. If it says "No connection," you'll need to walk through setup again.

Open the Alexa app and go to Devices > Echo & Alexa > Echo Dot Max > Wi-Fi. Select your network and re-enter the password. If your router has separate 2.4 and 5 GHz SSIDs, make sure the Dot Max joins whichever one is stable for you.

Sign Out and Back Into the Alexa App

A stale session token can kill cloud commands even when the app looks normal. In the Alexa app, tap More (the three-line menu at the bottom right), then Settings > Alexa Account > Sign Out. Confirm. The app returns to the login screen. Sign back in with your Amazon credentials and try sending a command to a smart home device again.

Verify Local Network Permission on iOS

iOS 14 and later require apps to ask for Local Network permission before they can discover devices on your home network. If you accidentally tapped "Don't Allow," the Alexa app won't see your Echo Dot Max or the accessories connected through it. Open Settings > Alexa on your iPhone and toggle Local Network ON. Restart the Alexa app and retry the command.

On Android, the Alexa app needs the Location permission (recommended) and Nearby Devices permission (Android 13+). Go to Settings > Apps > Alexa > Permissions and make sure they're both allowed.

Is Your Alexa+ Subscription Active?

The Echo Dot Max shipped with the new AZ3 chip and on-device AI Accelerator, and several smart home features, like advanced scene management and proactive routines, are gated behind an Alexa+ subscription. If you haven't enrolled, the app may show commands but fail to execute them. Open the Alexa app, tap More > Alexa+, and check your enrollment status. Alexa+ is free with Prime or $19.99/month standalone (US). If your subscription lapsed, the app will stop controlling certain devices until you renew.

Power Cycle the Echo Dot Max

Unplug the power adapter from the back of the Dot Max and wait at least 30 seconds. Plug it back in. The light ring will glow blue briefly during boot, then settle into whatever color you've set. This clears temporary firmware hangups without losing any settings. Wait one minute for the app to refresh before trying again.

Check for Smart Home Hub Conflicts

The Echo Dot Max includes a built-in Zigbee radio, a Matter controller, and a Thread border router. If you already have a separate hub (like an Echo Plus, a SmartThings hub, or an Apple TV) paired to the same smart bulb or sensor, the Dot Max's commissioner can fail. Go to Devices > Smart Home Hubs in the Alexa app and see if the Dot Max shows as the controller. If a different hub is already paired, you may need to remove the accessory from the other hub first, then re-discover it with the Dot Max. The app will guide you through it.

Update the Alexa App and Device Firmware

Open the App Store or Google Play and search for Alexa. If there's an Update button, tap it. Old app versions sometimes lose compatibility with newer Echo firmware. For device firmware, say "Alexa, check for updates." The Dot Max will tell you if it's up to date and trigger an update if one is available. After the update, restart the app and try again.

Reset and Re-Pair the Echo Dot Max

If nothing else has worked, you can reset the Dot Max to factory defaults. Press and hold the Action button (the button with a dot icon) for about 25 seconds. The light ring will turn orange, then turn off, then come back on solid orange. Release the button once you see solid orange. The speaker is now in setup mode. Open the Alexa app, tap the + icon in the top-left corner, and choose Add Device > Amazon Echo > Echo Dot Max. Follow the on-screen prompts to re-pair it to your Wi-Fi and restore your device connections. A reset clears any saved Wi-Fi credentials and custom settings, but any Alexa routines and device associations linked to your account are restored once you sign in.
