When your Dell XPS 16 is completely unresponsive, it's a stressful moment. The problem could be anything from a simple power hiccup to a more serious hardware fault. Before you start worrying about major repairs, work through these practical steps.
Check the Power Adapter and Connection
Start with the basics. Ensure the power adapter is firmly plugged into a working wall outlet and that the connection to your XPS 16 is secure. The XPS 16 uses a USB-C charger, so check both ends of the cable. I'd also try a different outlet to rule out a problem with the power source itself.
Look for an LED indicator on the adapter itself, if it has one. A faulty or underpowered charger is one of the most common reasons a laptop won't turn on. If you have access to another high-wattage USB-C charger, it's worth testing.
Perform a Forced Restart (EC Reset)
This is often the quickest fix for a frozen or unresponsive state. Disconnect the charger from your XPS 16. Hold down the power button firmly for a full 30 seconds. This drains any residual power from the motherboard and resets the embedded controller.
After the 30 seconds, release the button, plug the charger back in, and try pressing the power button normally. This simple reset can clear temporary hardware glitches that prevent booting.
Look and Listen for Signs of Life

Run the Pre-Boot Diagnostic System
Dell builds a hardware diagnostic tool right into the system. Turn the laptop off. Press the power button, then immediately start tapping the F12 key repeatedly until you see a menu.

While in the BIOS, you can navigate to the Thermal Management section. In some cases, incorrect fan or thermal profiles can cause boot issues, especially if the system is detecting an overheating component.
Inspect for Physical Issues
Look over your laptop carefully. Check the USB-C ports for any debris, bent pins, or damage that could prevent proper charging. Gently inspect the bottom case for any unusual bulging, which could indicate a swollen battery, a serious safety hazard that requires immediate replacement.
Consider if the laptop was recently exposed to moisture or suffered a physical impact. These events can cause internal damage that prevents booting.

If you can get the laptop to boot, even temporarily, run Dell SupportAssist. This application can automatically scan your system for outdated drivers, firmware, and known hardware issues.
