When your CMF Phone 2 Pro's Settings app keeps closing or crashing, it stops you from managing your phone entirely. This is usually a software hiccup within Nothing OS, and there are a few straightforward ways to get things working again.
Restart Your CMF Phone 2 Pro
Let's start with the simplest fix. A quick restart clears out temporary glitches in the system memory that can cause apps like Settings to misbehave. Just press and hold the power button until the power menu appears, then tap "Restart."
If the Settings app is crashing so badly you can't even access that menu, you'll need to force a restart. Press and hold the power button for about 10 seconds, or until you see the Nothing logo appear on the screen as the phone reboots.
Clear the Settings App Cache
Your phone stores temporary cache files to help apps load faster. Sometimes this data for the Settings app gets corrupted. Clearing it forces the app to rebuild these files from scratch, which often solves the crashing.
To do this, you first need to get into the Settings app, even if it's just for a moment. Quickly go to Settings > Apps > See all apps. Find and tap on "Settings" in the list. Then, tap Storage & cache and select Clear cache.
You don't need to clear the data for the Settings app itself, as that would reset all your preferences. The cache clear is a safe, non-destructive first step.
Check for a System Update
Nothing frequently releases updates for Nothing OS that fix bugs and improve stability. An outdated system version could be the reason your Settings app is unstable. Since you can't reliably get into Settings right now, try using the notification shade shortcut.
Swipe down from the top of your screen twice to open the full quick settings panel. Look for a gear icon or a tile that says "System updates." If you don't see it, you can try asking Google Assistant: "Hey Google, check for system updates on my phone."
If an update is available, install it. Your phone will restart as part of the process, which applies the fix. I've found that many random app crashes on clean Android skins like Nothing OS are resolved with a pending update.
Review Recently Installed Apps
Sometimes, a third-party app you recently installed can conflict with system processes, causing unexpected crashes. Think about any new apps you added around the time the problem started.
If you can get into Settings briefly, go to Settings > Apps and sort by "Recently installed." Try uninstalling the most recent apps one by one, restarting your phone after each, to see if the Settings app stabilizes. You can always reinstall them later.
This is a common culprit, especially with apps that request broad permissions or overlay functions, like custom launchers or accessibility tools.
Boot Into Safe Mode
Safe Mode temporarily disables all third-party apps. If the Settings app works perfectly in Safe Mode, you'll know for sure that a downloaded app is causing the problem. To boot your CMF Phone 2 Pro into Safe Mode, press and hold the power button until the power off menu appears.
Then, press and hold the "Power off" option on your screen. A prompt will appear asking if you want to reboot into Safe Mode. Tap "OK." Your phone will restart, and you'll see "Safe Mode" in the bottom corner.
Test the Settings app now. If it doesn't crash, restart your phone normally to exit Safe Mode. You'll then need to uninstall problematic apps, starting with the most recent ones as mentioned before.
Reset App Preferences
This is a useful middle-ground step. Resetting app preferences will revert all your app-specific settings, like permissions, default apps, and background data restrictions, back to their original state. It won't delete any of your personal data or apps.
To do this, navigate to Settings > Apps > See all apps. Tap the three-dot menu in the top right and select Reset app preferences. Confirm your choice. Afterward, you'll need to re-grant permissions to apps when you use them next, but it can clear up conflicts causing system app crashes.
Perform a Factory Reset
If you've tried everything and the Settings app is still unusable, a factory reset is the final step. This will erase all data on your phone and return it to its out-of-the-box state. You must back up everything important first.
Since accessing the reset menu in Settings is likely impossible, you can use the hardware key method. First, power your phone off completely. Then, press and hold the Volume Up button and the Power button together until the Nothing logo appears.
Use the volume buttons to navigate to "Wipe data/factory reset" and press the power button to select it. Confirm the reset. Once it's complete, select "Reboot system now." Your CMF Phone 2 Pro will start fresh, and the Settings app should be fully functional.
