Resetting your Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones wipes all paired Bluetooth devices and returns the headphones to a factory-fresh state. You'd do this if you're selling them, dealing with connection glitches, or troubleshooting audio dropouts that won't clear with a simple power cycle. The reset takes about 30 seconds and doesn't affect saved EQ presets in the Bose Music app, but it does clear every device from the pairing list.

The method is specific to the QuietComfort Ultra series and requires both hands. Make sure the headphones are powered on before starting the reset sequence. If they won't power on at all, plug them into a USB-C charger for 15 minutes first using any standard 5W adapter.

What the Reset Actually Does

This isn't a soft reboot or a cache clear. It's a full factory reset that wipes the internal Bluetooth pairing database. After the reset, the headphones will not reconnect to your phone, tablet, or laptop automatically. You'll need to re-pair them through the Bose Music app or via your device's Bluetooth settings.

If you're resetting just to fix a software glitch rather than to sell the headphones, factor in about a minute afterward for re-pairing. The Bose Music app saves your account settings and EQ preferences in the cloud, so those come back once you sign in.

Run the Factory Reset

Power on the headphones by sliding the Power/Bluetooth switch on the right earcup to the right until you hear the startup tone. Now slide and hold that same switch to the right while simultaneously pressing and holding the Action button on the left earcup. Keep both held for a full 30 seconds.

During the hold, the status LED on the right earcup blinks white. After about 30 seconds, the headphones power off automatically, then turn back on. That on-off-on pattern confirms the reset took. If the LED just stops blinking and nothing else happens, you likely released too early. Try again and count the seconds out loud.

Once the headphones are back on, they're in factory pairing mode. Your phone won't connect automatically at this point.

Confirm the Reset Worked

Open Settings > Bluetooth on your iPhone or the Bluetooth settings menu on your Android device. Your Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones should no longer appear under Connected or My Devices. On a Pixel or Galaxy phone, check the saved devices list too. The reset removes the headphones from every device that had previously paired.

If the headphones still show as connected on any device, the reset didn't complete. Repeat the hold sequence and watch for the power-off then power-on confirmation. The LED behavior during the hold is your main indicator that you're pressing the right buttons.

Re-Pair Through Bose Music

Open the Bose Music app. If you haven't updated it recently, make sure you're on version 10 or later (iOS 17 and Android 13 are the minimum requirements now). The app should detect the headphones in pairing mode within a few seconds. Tap Connect and follow the prompts to restore your saved preferences.

You can also pair directly from your phone's Bluetooth menu if you prefer. The headphones appear as Bose QC Ultra Headphones in the available devices list. Tap to pair, then open the Bose Music app afterward to access features like Immersive Audio and EQ adjustment.

If the Touch Volume Slider Gets Tricky

This is a known quirk on the QuietComfort Ultra series. The capacitive touch volume slider on the right earcup can misregister swipes in cold weather. If you're outside in low temperatures and the volume jumps erratically, try using the Bose Music app's volume slider instead, or use your phone's physical volume buttons.

The issue typically resolves once the headphones warm back up to room temperature. It's not a hardware defect and doesn't require a reset to fix.

Wired Mode Won't Work After the Reset

If you use the included 3.5mm cable for wired listening on flights, note that USB-C audio mode requires firmware 1.0.5 or later. After a factory reset, the headphones still retain their firmware version. But if you'd previously reverted firmware (unusual but possible), wired mode might not work until you update through the Bose Music app.

Check Settings > Product Info in the Bose Music app to see your current firmware. Anything below 1.0.5 means wired audio via USB-C won't function. The 3.5mm analog cable works regardless of firmware version and also preserves battery during long listening sessions.

Keep the Headband in Good Shape

The headband padding on these headphones wears down faster than the ear cushions. If you're noticing less clamp force or visible flattening on the headband foam, consider preventive care: avoid storing the headphones with the headband compressed under heavy items, and always use the carrying case. The ear cushions themselves typically last 2-3 years before needing replacement through Bose.

These maintenance items don't require a reset, but they're worth knowing about if you're already poking around the headphones' settings. A well-maintained pair sounds just as good at year three as it did on day one.
