Your Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds won't connect to your phone. They show up in Bluetooth but pairing fails, the case light blinks oddly, or your phone just doesn't see them at all. This is usually a quick fix, and you don't need a trip to a service center.
Before anything else, make sure Bluetooth is actually on. Swipe down from the top of your phone and check the Bluetooth tile. It's easy to accidentally toggle it off on both Android and iOS. Bose lists this as the first step for a reason.
Force Restart Your Phone First
A surprising number of pairing failures aren't the earbuds, they're the phone. A quick restart clears up temporary Bluetooth glitches on both iPhone and Android.
On an iPhone with Face ID, press and release Volume Up, press and release Volume Down, then press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears. On Android, press and hold the Power button for about 10 seconds or until the menu appears, then select Restart. Some Samsung models let you hold Volume Down + Power together for a forced reboot.
Once the phone's back up, open the earbud case near it and try pairing again. If the Bose Music app picks them up, you're set.
Charge the Case and Earbuds
Low battery can block pairing outright. The Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds need enough juice to maintain a stable Bluetooth handshake. Drop them in the case and plug the case into a USB‑C charger for at least 10 minutes before trying again.
The case charges at 5W standard input. It also supports Qi wireless charging, but only if you have the separately sold wireless charging case. The status light on the case front tells you the charge level: solid amber means the case is nearly empty, solid green means it's fine. If the light doesn't come on at all, give it a longer charge.
Reset the Earbuds With the Case Button
This is the most important fix for a Bose QuietComfort Ultra that won't pair. The reset method is specific: open the case with both earbuds inside, then press and hold the button on the back of the case for 25 seconds. The status light blinks white twice, then slowly pulses blue, then turns off. Do the full 25‑second hold three times in a row. The reset is complete when the light blinks amber for three seconds and then slowly blinks blue again.
Most pairing failures clear up after this three‑cycle reset. It wipes the earbuds' pairing list and puts them back in factory‑fresh discovery mode.
Forget the Device, Then Re‑Pair in the Bose Music App
If your phone has the earbuds in its Bluetooth list but they won't connect, the saved pairing record may be corrupted. On your phone, go to Bluetooth settings, find the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds, and tap Forget or Unpair. Confirm the action.
Now open the Bose Music app on your phone. (iOS 17 or later is required; Android 13 or later is required. The app was renamed and bumped requirements with v10 in May 2024.) Tap the plus icon to add a new product, then follow the on‑screen pairing instructions. The earbuds should appear within a few seconds.
Check the Bose Music App Version
An outdated Bose Music app can block pairing entirely. Open your phone's app store and search for Bose Music. If an update is available, install it. The current version requires iOS 17 or Android 13 at minimum. If your phone is running an older OS, the app won't work properly.
This also applies if you recently updated your phone's operating system. Sometimes the app needs a matching update to stay compatible.
Clean the Charging Contacts
Pull both earbuds out of the case and inspect the metal pins inside the charging wells. Also check the contacts on the bottom of each earbud. Lint, earwax, or dust sitting on those pins can prevent the case from detecting the earbuds, which breaks the pairing handshake.
Use a dry cotton swab or a soft‑bristle brush (a clean toothbrush works) to gently clear any debris. For stubborn gunk, dampen the swab with a tiny bit of isopropyl alcohol (90% or higher) and wipe the contacts. Let everything air dry for a minute before putting the earbuds back in. These earbuds don't have a heart‑rate sensor, so alcohol is safe here.
Try Pairing With a Different Device
If the earbuds pair to your tablet, laptop, or a friend's phone but not yours, the problem is on your phone. If they refuse to pair to anything, the earbuds themselves likely need a deeper reset.
This 30‑second test saves you from hours of debugging the wrong device. Borrow any modern Android phone or iPhone and open the Bose Music app. If they pair instantly, you know the earbuds are fine and the issue lives on your primary phone's Bluetooth stack.
Update the Earbuds Firmware
Bose pushes firmware updates through the Bose Music app. An outdated firmware can cause pairing drops and connection failures. Open the Bose Music app, tap the Settings icon (gear) for your earbuds, then look for a Software Update option. If one is available, install it. The earbuds need to be in the case and connected to the app during the update.
Keep the case near your phone and don't open or close it until the update finishes. If the update fails partway through, the earbuds may become temporarily unresponsive, but another reset usually brings them back.
Disable Multipoint Bluetooth
The Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds support multipoint Bluetooth, but it requires manual switching, it doesn't auto‑detect. If you've connected them to multiple devices in the past, a stale multipoint connection can interfere with new pairing attempts.
In the Bose Music app, go to the earbuds settings and turn off Multipoint. Then try pairing again from scratch. You can re‑enable it later once the initial connection is solid.
Run CustomTune Calibration
This isn't a direct pairing fix, but it helps the earbuds work correctly after they connect. CustomTune calibrates the EQ to your ear canal shape. Open the Bose Music app, select your earbuds, and tap Sound Settings. Run the calibration. This ensures the active noise cancellation and audio profile are optimized for your ears.
If you notice that the earbuds pair but sound off or the controls feel laggy, calibration often resolves it. It's a quick one‑time setup that takes about 15 seconds.
If none of these steps get your Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds to pair, the reset method is your best bet. Repeat the three‑cycle reset, it's the most reliable fix in the book. The earbuds should come back to life and pair normally.
