Your Apple Watch SE (3rd Gen) screen is on, maybe even showing the time and notifications, but tapping it does nothing. The Digital Crown turns, the side button clicks, but the display won't register your touch. You don't need to book a Genius Bar appointment just yet, most frozen screens on this model come down to a handful of easy fixes.

The SE 3rd Gen uses a 60Hz LTPO display that can briefly stutter when transitioning between always-on and active mode. That's a known quirk, not a hardware failure. But if the touch stays dead, here's where to start.

Wipe the Screen Clean

Sunscreen, sweat, and skin oil build up fast on the SE 3rd Gen's display. The new always-on Retina LTPO surface is more smudge-prone than the older SE screens, and a thin film of oil is enough to block touch input. Take the watch off, wipe it with a soft microfiber cloth, and try again.

If you've been working out, rinse the watch under cool running water for a few seconds, the SE 3rd Gen is water resistant to 50 meters. Dry it completely before testing the screen again.

Check If Water Lock Is Active

If you swam or showered with the watch, Water Lock might still be on. It's designed to disable the touch screen so water droplets don't trigger accidental taps. You'll see a small water droplet icon at the top of the watch face when it's active.

Turn the Digital Crown all the way to disable Water Lock. You'll hear tones and feel haptics as the watch ejects trapped water from the speaker. After that, your touch input should work normally.

Force Restart the Watch

If the screen is frozen mid-app or touch doesn't respond after cleaning, force restart. Hold the side button and Digital Crown together for at least 10 seconds. Keep holding until the Apple logo appears, then let go.

This is safe and won't erase your data. The SE 3rd Gen boots up in about 30 seconds, and the touch screen usually comes back clean after a force restart.

Peel Off Any Screen Protector

The SE 3rd Gen has slightly different bezel curvature than the SE 2nd Gen. Screen protectors designed for the older model may not fit right on this one, and a misaligned protector can deaden touch sensitivity around the edges. If you're using a protector from a previous Apple Watch, peel it off and test the display directly on the glass.

If touch works fine without the protector, you need a screen protector specifically made for the SE 3rd Gen. The fit matters.

Update to the Latest watchOS

watchOS 26 has shipped patches that fix touch driver hang-ups on the SE 3rd Gen. If you're behind on updates, that's likely the issue. Since touch isn't working, use the Digital Crown to navigate on the watch, scroll to Settings, press the Crown to open, then go to General > Software Update. Or open the Watch app on your iPhone to push the update from there, which doesn't require watch touch input.

Disable AssistiveTouch If It Was Turned On

AssistiveTouch lets you control the Apple Watch with hand gestures like clenches and pinches. If it's accidentally enabled, regular taps may not register correctly because the watch is waiting for gesture input instead. On your iPhone, open the Watch app, then head to My Watch > Accessibility > AssistiveTouch and toggle it off. Test the screen after.

Unpair and Repair the Watch

If the touch screen still doesn't respond after all the above, unpairing the watch from your iPhone wipes watchOS to a clean state and removes any corrupted touch settings. Open the Watch app on your iPhone, tap your watch name at the top, then choose Unpair Apple Watch. The process erases the watch automatically and creates a backup of your data.

After it finishes, re-pair the SE 3rd Gen and choose Restore from Backup. In my experience, this clears almost every lingering software issue with touch response on the SE line.

Test Touch Across Different Apps

Before assuming the display is broken, try tapping different parts of the interface. Swipe down from the top for Notification Center, swipe up for Control Center, press the Digital Crown to open the app grid. If any of these register input, the touch hardware is fine and the issue is limited to a specific app or software glitch.

If nothing works after a force restart and an unpair, open the Apple Support app on your iPhone and book a service appointment. The SE 3rd Gen doesn't have ECG or SpO2 sensors to worry about, but a stuck touch screen is worth getting checked in-store.
