Ultra Mobile is a T-Mobile MVNO with a sharp focus on international calling. Plans include free calling to dozens of countries, which makes Ultra popular with customers who keep family abroad. T-Mobile acquired Ultra Mobile (along with sister brand Mint Mobile and the prepaid brand Plum) through the Ka'ena Corporation deal that closed on May 1, 2024, so Ultra now sits inside the T-Mobile family. The underlying APN setup is straightforward, but two valid APN values exist, and either one can work depending on the phone.
Here is the verified configuration from Ultra Mobile's own setup documentation, plus what to do when the primary APN does not bring data up.
Ultra Mobile Quick Facts
- Ultra Mobile runs on T-Mobile's network in the US (T-Mobile acquired Ultra's parent company Ka'ena Corporation in May 2024), with 4G LTE and 5G coverage that matches T-Mobile postpaid in most markets.
- The primary Android APN is wholesale, the same value used by other T-Mobile-network MVNOs like Tello and Mint Mobile. An alternative is fast.t-mobile.com, which works on phones where the wholesale APN does not register.
- iPhones running iOS 15 or later usually auto-configure Ultra Mobile through Apple's carrier-bundles system. iPhone 13 and newer phones often have these settings preinstalled.
- International calling minutes do not require any special APN. The standard data APN handles voice over Wi-Fi or LTE; international minutes are tracked at the account level.
Getting to the APN Screen
Start with the primary wholesale APN, which is the value Ultra Mobile documents. If it does not bring data up after a reboot, fall back to fast.t-mobile.com as a separate APN entry.

International Calling and APN
Ultra Mobile's headline feature is high-minute international calling allowances to dozens of countries. None of that requires any APN customization. The minutes count against your plan's pool when you dial an international number through the regular phone app, and they work whether you are on Wi-Fi or LTE.
What does require APN-level attention is using Ultra Mobile while you are abroad. International roaming on Ultra is limited compared to T-Mobile postpaid, and the APN Roaming Protocol may need to be set to IPv4 only for some destinations. Check the Ultra Mobile account dashboard for active roaming destinations and any plan add-ons required for international data.
If you are in the US and calling international destinations, the standard wholesale APN is all you need. The carrier handles international voice routing through your plan's allowances.
Common Ultra Mobile APN Issues
- After saving the Android APN, reboot the phone. Ultra Mobile sometimes does not switch to the new entry until the device re-registers with T-Mobile.
- Confirm the APN value is
wholesalein lowercase. Capitalization breaks the entry on T-Mobile's network. - If
wholesaledoes not work after a clean reboot, savefast.t-mobile.comas a separate APN and select it as the active entry. Some Android phones prefer the T-Mobile-shared value. - If MMS fails, double-check the MMS Port. Ultra uses 8080, not the more common 80. Setting it to 80 breaks MMS while data may still work.
- For iPhones, install any pending Carrier Settings update at Settings > General > About.
- If your phone moved from another carrier to Ultra Mobile, run Reset Network Settings first to clear old APN entries.
- If you are traveling and data is failing, set APN Roaming Protocol to IPv4 only. Some international roaming partners do not support IPv6.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Ultra Mobile share the wholesale APN with Mint and Tello?
T-Mobile uses Wholesale as the back-end APN identifier for its MVNO partners. Ultra Mobile, Mint Mobile, Tello, and other T-Mobile-network MVNOs all use the same value. The shared APN is a network-side configuration, not a sign that the carriers share anything else.
Do I need a different APN for 5G on Ultra Mobile?
No. The same APN handles 4G LTE and 5G on T-Mobile's network. To get 5G access, enable 5G in network mode settings and confirm your phone supports T-Mobile's 5G bands.
Why is the MMS port 8080 instead of 80?
T-Mobile-network MVNO infrastructure uses port 8080 for MMS routing rather than the more common 80 used by Verizon-based carriers. Ultra Mobile inherits this default. Setting it to 80 will break MMS while data continues to work.
Are Ultra Mobile and Mint Mobile related?
Yes. Both Ultra Mobile and Mint Mobile (and the smaller brand Plum) sat under Ka'ena Corporation, which T-Mobile acquired in May 2024. They share the same underlying network and the same shared wholesale APN value, and now they share the same ultimate corporate owner too. Each brand still runs as a separate product with its own plans and pricing.
Can I use Ultra Mobile in international roaming?
Limited yes. Ultra has some international roaming through T-Mobile's roaming partners, but coverage and pricing depend on the destination. Check the Ultra account dashboard for active destinations and add-on plans before traveling.
My APN screen is grayed out on iPhone. Is that a problem?
Sometimes. If your iPhone is carrier-locked to another carrier, the APN editor may stay locked. Request an unlock from the original carrier. If the iPhone is unlocked and APN values are still hidden, Ultra Mobile's carrier profile is probably handling the configuration in the background.
What does MMS Max Message Size 1048576 mean?
It is the MMS attachment size cap in bytes (exactly 1 MB), the standard limit across US carriers. Larger files should go through iMessage, RCS, or Wi-Fi-based messaging instead.
