Total Wireless rebranded back from Total by Verizon in July 2024, but the underlying service did not change. The carrier is still Verizon-owned, still primarily on Verizon's network, and still uses the same APN values as before the name change. If you switched carriers recently or are setting up a new SIM, here is the verified configuration.

Some Total Wireless lines are on T-Mobile's network rather than Verizon's. That happens when you brought a T-Mobile-locked phone to Total Wireless or activated a SIM specifically for the T-Mobile path. The APN values differ between the two, so check which underlying network your line is on before configuring.

What Changed Recently

  • Total by Verizon became Total Wireless on July 11, 2024. The name change did not affect APN settings; everything that worked under Total by Verizon still works under Total Wireless.
  • Total Wireless is Verizon-owned and operates mostly on Verizon's network. Some lines route through T-Mobile instead, depending on the SIM you received and which phone you brought.
  • The Verizon-network APN is TRACFONE.VZWENTP. The T-Mobile-network APN is TRACFONE.WFM. They are not interchangeable; the wrong one will not connect.
  • For the fastest setup, text APN to 611611 from your Total Wireless number. Total pushes a configuration message back; tap it to install on most phones.

Getting to the APN Screen

Confirm which underlying network your Total Wireless line uses before entering values. The activation email or SIM packaging usually states this. If you cannot tell, the carrier name in the status bar plus a quick call to Total support can resolve it.

Android

  1. 1.Open Settings
  2. 2.Tap Connections (on Samsung) or Network & Internet (most other Android phones)
  3. 3.Tap Mobile Networks, or SIMs then your Total Wireless SIM
  4. 4.Tap Access Point Names
  5. 5.Tap the three-dot menu, then New APN
  6. 6.Enter the values from the Android list below, picking the APN that matches your underlying network
  7. 7.Tap Save, then select the new APN
  8. 8.Restart the phone or toggle Airplane Mode for 20 seconds

iPhone and iPad

  1. 1.Open Settings
  2. 2.Tap Cellular or Mobile Data
  3. 3.Tap Cellular Data Network
  4. 4.Enter the iPhone values from the list below
  5. 5.If the menu is missing, run Reset Network Settings and try again

Verizon vs T-Mobile Underlying Network

Total Wireless lines run on one of two networks. Most lines (especially newer ones activated since the rebrand) are on Verizon. Older lines, lines activated for specific phone models, or lines that received a T-Mobile SIM are on T-Mobile.

The two networks have different coverage and different signal characteristics in different parts of the country. Verizon is generally stronger in rural areas, while T-Mobile has more 5G mid-band coverage in metro areas. Total Wireless does not let you switch between them after activation; you would need to swap to a new SIM provisioned for the other network.

To identify which network your line is on, check your account dashboard at totalwireless.com, the activation email, or call support. The APN you need depends entirely on this answer.

Common Setup Issues

  • After saving the Android APN, reboot the phone. Total Wireless lines sometimes do not switch to the new entry until the phone re-registers with the network.
  • Confirm the APN value matches your underlying network. TRACFONE.VZWENTP on a T-Mobile line will not connect, and vice versa.
  • If MMS fails on a Verizon line, double-check the MMSC. Total Wireless uses Verizon's standard MMSC (http://mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms), which is correct but easy to get wrong.
  • Text APN to 611611 from your Total Wireless number for an auto-configuration push. This usually works without any manual entry.
  • For iPhones, install any pending Carrier Settings update at Settings > General > About. The prompt appears for about 15 seconds.
  • If your phone moved from another carrier to Total Wireless, run Reset Network Settings first. Old APN entries from the previous carrier can block Total Wireless's auto-profile.
  • If the issue began right after the rebrand from Total by Verizon and your phone shows the old branding, this is cosmetic; the underlying service is unchanged. A reboot or Reset Network Settings refreshes the carrier name.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Total Wireless the same as Total by Verizon?

Yes. Total Wireless rebranded back to its original name on July 11, 2024. The underlying service, network, plans, and APN settings are unchanged. Your service may still say Total by Verizon on older account pages or activation emails, but the configuration is identical.

Why does the APN start with TRACFONE if I am on Total Wireless?

Tracfone is Total Wireless's parent company (acquired by Verizon in 2021). The APN values reference Tracfone's back-end infrastructure, which is shared across multiple Verizon-owned prepaid brands. The naming is legacy and does not change between rebrands.

Do I need separate APN values for 5G on Total Wireless?

No. The same APN handles 4G LTE and 5G on each network. To pull 5G access, enable 5G in network mode settings, confirm your plan includes it, and be in a 5G coverage area for your underlying network.

Can I switch my Total Wireless SIM from Verizon network to T-Mobile network?

No. Total Wireless SIMs are network-specific. To switch, you need a new SIM provisioned for the other network. Contact Total Wireless support to request the swap; there is usually no fee.

My APN settings are grayed out on my iPhone. Why?

The iPhone is likely carrier-locked. Request an unlock from the carrier you bought the iPhone from. Locked iPhones still receive Total Wireless's auto-profile, but manual editing stays disabled.

The APN TRACFONE.VZWENTP is unusual. Is it correct?

Yes. The .VZWENTP suffix indicates Verizon enterprise/wholesale provisioning, which is how Tracfone-family brands like Total Wireless connect to Verizon's infrastructure. The format with the dot and uppercase letters is required.

What does MMS Max Message Size 1048576 mean on iPhone?

It is the standard 1 MB MMS attachment cap in bytes. Total Wireless follows this limit across both Verizon and T-Mobile underlying networks. Larger files should go through iMessage or messaging apps that send over data.
