When your TCL Roku TV has a picture but no sound, it's usually a quick setting that got changed or a handshake issue with an external device. The good news is you can almost always get the audio back without much hassle.

Check Your Remote and Volume

First, grab your Roku remote and press the volume up button a few times. Check the on-screen volume bar to make sure it's not muted. If you're using a separate soundbar or AV receiver remote, try that one too, as it might be controlling a different volume level.

Also, remember that TCL's IR remote requires a clear line of sight to the TV's sensor. If the batteries are low or something is blocking the path, your volume presses might not be registering.

Verify the Audio Output Mode

Press the Home button on your remote, then go to Settings > Audio. Look for the Audio mode setting. If you're trying to use the TV's built-in speakers, make sure this is set to Stereo or Auto (Recommended).

If you have a soundbar or home theater system connected, you'll need to adjust other settings here. Selecting the wrong output is the most common reason for sudden silence.

Perform a System Restart

Before you unplug anything, try the built-in restart. Go to Settings > System > System restart. This soft reboot clears out minor software glitches that can affect the audio processor.

If the sound is still missing, then do a full power cycle. Unplug the TV's power cord from the wall outlet and wait a full 60 seconds. This drains any residual power and resets the hardware. Plug it back in and turn the TV on.

Inspect Your External Device Connections

If the sound is only gone from a game console, streaming stick, or Blu-ray player, the issue is likely with that connection. Unplug the HDMI cable from both the device and the TV, then firmly plug it back in.

Try a different HDMI port on your TCL TV. I'd also recommend testing with a different HDMI cable if you have one handy, as cables can fail and cause audio dropouts.

Configure HDMI ARC for Soundbars

If your soundbar is connected via HDMI ARC, it must be plugged into the specific port on your TCL TV labeled HDMI ARC. This is often HDMI 1. In your TV's settings, go to Settings > System > Control other devices (CEC) and ensure it's enabled.

You also need to set the correct audio format. Go to Settings > Audio > Digital output format. If your soundbar is silent, try changing this to PCM-Stereo. Some soundbars have trouble decoding Dolby formats directly from the TV.

Test the TV's Internal Speakers

To rule out a problem with the TV itself, disconnect all external audio devices. Go back to Settings > Audio and set the audio mode for the internal speakers. Play something from the Roku home screen, like The Roku Channel.

If you get sound from the internal speakers now, the issue is with your external audio setup or its connection. If there's still no sound, the problem is within the TV's settings or hardware.

Check for a Roku Software Update

Audio bugs are frequently patched in system updates. Go to Settings > System > System update and select Check now. If an update is available, let it install completely. The TV will restart on its own.

I've seen updates specifically fix issues where sound would cut out on certain HDMI ports or after using a particular streaming app.

Adjust Advanced Audio Settings

There are a couple of settings that can inadvertently mute audio. Press the Home button on your remote five times, then press Fast Forward three times, and Rewind two times. This opens a secret menu.

Be careful here. Look for any audio-related options like "SPDIF" that might be set to off. Also, back in the regular settings under Audio, ensure Volume mode is not set to "Off" and that Volume leveling is turned off for testing.

Troubleshoot a Single Streaming App

When audio is missing from just Netflix, Hulu, or Disney+, the problem is with that app. Try playing a different show or movie within the app. Sometimes, specific content has an audio track that causes issues.

From the Roku home screen, highlight the problematic app, press the Star (*) button on your remote, and choose Remove channel. Then, go to the Roku Channel Store and re-add it. This clears the app's cache and data.

Reset Your Audio Configuration

If you've tried everything and the sound is still not working, you can reset all audio settings without affecting your installed channels or logins. Navigate to Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Factory reset.

Choose Reset audio settings. This will revert all sound-related options back to their original defaults, which often clears up any misconfiguration causing the silence.
