When your Samsung Smart TV has a picture but no sound, it's usually a simple setting or a handshake issue with an external audio device. The good news is you can almost always fix it yourself without needing a service call.
Start by pressing the volume up button on your Samsung remote. Check the on-screen display to make sure the mute icon isn't showing. I'd also check any other remotes you use, like for a soundbar or streaming device, as they might be controlling a different volume level.
Check Your Audio Output Source
On your Samsung TV, press the Home button and navigate to Settings > Sound > Sound Output. This is the most important setting to check. If you want sound from the TV itself, make sure TV Speaker is selected.
If you're using a soundbar or receiver, it should be set to the correct option like HDMI ARC or Bluetooth. Selecting the wrong output here is the single most common reason for having no sound at all.
Perform a Soft Reset
Hold down the power button on your Samsung remote for about 10 seconds. You'll see the TV turn off and then back on. This soft reset clears the TV's temporary memory and can resolve many glitches, including audio problems that just started.
For a more thorough reset, unplug the TV power cord from the wall outlet. Wait a full 60 seconds before plugging it back in. This full power cycle resets the audio processor and other internal components.
Inspect Your External Connections
If you're using a game console, streaming box, or Blu-ray player, check the HDMI cable. Unplug it from both the device and the TV, then firmly plug it back in. Try using a different HDMI port on your Samsung TV as well.
A faulty or loose HDMI cable is a frequent culprit. If you have a spare cable, try swapping it to see if the sound returns.
Verify HDMI ARC/eARC Setup
For soundbars connected via HDMI, you must use the specific port on your Samsung TV labeled HDMI (ARC) or HDMI (eARC). This is usually HDMI 3 or HDMI 4 on modern models.
Next, go to Settings > General & Privacy > External Device Manager and ensure Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) is turned on. This allows your TV and soundbar to communicate properly for audio control.
Change the Digital Output Format
Sometimes the audio format from your content isn't compatible with your sound system. Go to Settings > Sound > Expert Settings > Digital Output Audio Format.
Try changing this setting. PCM is the most basic and widely compatible format. If you're getting silence from a soundbar, switching from Auto or Dolby Digital to PCM often fixes it immediately.
Test the TV's Internal Speakers
To rule out a problem with the TV itself, disconnect all external audio devices. Go back to Sound Output and select TV Speaker. Play some content from the TV's built-in apps.
If you get sound from the internal speakers, then the issue is with your external audio setup or its connection. If there's still no sound, the problem is with the TV's audio system or settings.
Run the Built-In Self Diagnosis
Samsung TVs have a helpful diagnostic tool. Press the Home button, go to Settings > Support > Self Diagnosis. Select Sound Test.
The TV will play a test tone. If you can hear it, your TV's hardware is working and the issue is likely a setting. If you don't hear the test tone, there may be a deeper hardware problem.
Update Your TV's Software
Outdated software can cause audio bugs. Go to Settings > Support > Software Update. Select Update Now.
Allow the update to complete if one is available. Samsung frequently releases updates that fix issues with specific apps, HDMI ARC functionality, and audio codec support.
Check for App-Specific Issues
If the sound is missing from only one app like Netflix or Disney+, the problem is isolated to that app. First, try playing different content within the same app.
If that doesn't work, go to Settings > Support > Device Care > Manage Storage. Select the problematic app and choose Clear Cache. Then try the app again.
Reset the Sound Settings
If you've tried everything and sound is still not working, you can reset just the audio settings. Navigate to Settings > Sound > Expert Settings. Scroll down and select Reset Sound.
This will return all sound settings to their factory defaults without affecting your installed apps, logins, or picture settings. After the reset, go back and reconfigure your preferred Sound Output and other audio options.
