When your Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 volume buttons stop responding, it's one of those annoying issues that makes you feel stuck. You tap them, press harder, and nothing happens, no change in sound, no on-screen indicator, just silence. Let's get this sorted out.
Start with the absolute simplest fix. If you have a case on your phone, take it off. Some cases, especially thicker ones, can press against the buttons or block their movement entirely. It's worth checking before you do anything else.
Restart the phone with the volume keys
A forced restart clears out temporary software glitches that can make buttons unresponsive. On the Z Fold 7, press and hold the Volume down button and the Side button at the same time for about 10 seconds. Keep holding until the Samsung logo appears and the phone restarts.
This won't erase any of your data. It just reboots the system and can fix a surprising number of issues in under 30 seconds.
Clean around the volume buttons
Dust and debris are common culprits. The Z Fold 7 has a slim profile, and even a small speck lodged near the button can prevent it from registering presses. Grab some compressed air and give the area around the volume rocker a quick burst. If you notice any sticky residue, dip a cotton swab in a tiny bit of rubbing alcohol (90% or higher) and gently clean the button edges.
Go easy on the alcohol, you don't want any liquid seeping into the phone. Let the area dry completely before testing the buttons again.
Check your button-related settings
Samsung's software has a few settings that affect how the volume buttons behave. Open Settings > Sounds and vibration and check that Volume is set to show the on-screen slider when you press the buttons. Also look under Advanced features > Side key, make sure the Side key isn't set to do something unexpected when pressed, like opening an app instead of controlling volume.
If you're running Android 15 with One UI, there's also a setting under Accessibility > Interaction and dexterity that can reassign button functions. If anything looks altered, reset it to the default.
Use an alternate volume control method
While you're figuring out the hardware issue, you can still adjust the volume. Swipe down from the top of the screen to open the quick settings panel and use the slider there. Or press the Side button twice quickly to open Samsung Pay or your preferred app, if that works, the Side button itself is fine.
You can also add the Volume panel to your Edge panel by going to Settings > Display > Edge panels and enabling it. This gives you another way to change the volume without using the physical buttons.
Test in Safe Mode
Third-party apps can sometimes interfere with the system's button-handling. Booting into Safe Mode temporarily disables all downloaded apps, which helps you figure out if one of them is causing the problem.
To enter Safe Mode on the Z Fold 7, press and hold the Side button until the power menu appears. Tap and hold Power off until the Safe Mode prompt shows up, then tap Safe mode. The phone will restart with "Safe mode" in the bottom-left corner. Try the volume buttons now.
If they work in Safe Mode, a downloaded app is the culprit. Restart the phone normally to exit Safe Mode, then start uninstalling recent apps until you find the troublemaker.
Check for a software update
Samsung occasionally pushes updates that fix system-level bugs, including button responsiveness. Go to Settings > Software update > Download and install. If an update is available, install it and restart the phone.
The Z Fold 7 runs Android 15, and while it's the latest version, patches still roll out regularly. An update might contain the exact fix you need.
Factory reset if nothing else works
This is the nuclear option, so save it for last. A factory reset will erase everything on the phone and restore it to the state it was in when you first opened the box. Back up your photos, contacts, and anything else you don't want to lose before doing this.
Go to Settings > General management > Reset > Factory data reset. Follow the prompts to confirm. After the reset is complete, set up the phone as new and test the volume buttons before restoring any apps or data.
If the buttons still don't respond after a factory reset, the issue is likely hardware-related and would require a physical repair. But most of the time, one of the earlier steps will get them working again. Start simple and work your way through, you'll probably have it fixed in a few minutes.
